Eggs in dirt question

I am going out of town and have two females due to lay while I am gone. I sure hope they lay earlier.

My question is how long can the eggs be in the dirt before I dig them up? I wouldn't think they would go bad but was curious on everyones input on this.

What would happen if they laid on day one and I didn't get home for 6 days?

What's in the dirt that the eggs can absorb? Is this the dirt in their plant's pot?

50% sand and 50% soil (No fertilizers) is what I unusually use. I have time to prepare and could use peat and sand or something else.

I am going to look for a sitter for them , but am curious what would happen in the event I cannot.

Edit: It would be in their laying bin

Why would anything happen? Some people prefer not to dig them up at all. The only problem I can see is it would be too hot, and if it is, then you definitely risk losing all the eggs

In this case, could he use a thermometer? Or would the drop in temperature at night be too cold?

Ryan, ive never kept eggs in the laying bins for longer for 3 days. In fact, ive only done it once and the eggs were fine after 3 days. As long as the medium isn't to moist, and the medium remains in room temp you don't have anything to worry about. Eggs are alot more resilient than people cut them out to be.

Thanks Nic!

The way I think of it is. They are laid in the dirt in the wild and don't go bad why would they go bad after a couple of days? Just my incite on the situation.

Because conditions in the wild and at home can be two completely different things.

True but cant you mimic the wild and just not make the soil to moist? I think the soil can hold plenty of moisture for a wile.

The soil drying out and the temperature issue would be the biggest concerns.

Hope they get laid before you go!
If you have a good sitter, he/she should be able to dig them up for you.

I did find a really god sitter to take care of these two while I am gone.

Thanks everyone for all the info.

Ok Ryan,
I'm a good baby sitter, but nothing compared to a god sitter (what is that anyway?) I look forward to the challenge and hope they lay for me while you are away!:)

Just to post this for anyone else with this concern. I had an explosion of eggs being laid once. and ran out of Incubators to house them. So I left a batch of them in the bin, a 5 gallon bucket, with about 10" of properly moistened sand.
I left the laid eggs in there untouched, just like the female that burried them did. Well after 5 months, I finally had room in an Incubator, so I decided to dig them up. (Figuring they would be bad) well to my surprise at that time they were all perfectly ok. So I incubated them and they nearly all hatched with strong healthy Neonates, about 2 months later.

The Bucket was kept in a cool darker corner, of a room. I put a lid on the bucket and punched a few holes in it. that was it. That way the humidity would remain. > It was Just kept at room temperature.

good luck with your eggs mine layed hers last nite and there in coconut fibre im not sure how many yet as she is still covering them up so as soon as she has finished i will remove them .:)
