I have used similar ballasts in the past from home depot and the like with unsatisfactory results. The ballast can get real hot and are not always safe. These days I use the Foster and Smith Coralife E-Z ballast kit. It can be easily and safely wired right into the cage, using the rubber end caps so no moisture gets into the connections of the bulbs. There is no heat issue with the externally mounted ballast as well. In the end will cost you the same or less than the hardware you buy at home depot.
