Enclosure Questions

Okay, I have some questions about vivarium set up... so I got a baby male veiled chameleon (old enough to eat small crickets) but got an enclosure way too big for him now and tried to close off the top portion. Is this the wrong way to do it? Should baby Oliver be on the top section of the enclosure so he can climb? Comments and concerns please! Ps. If you look in the top right of the zoomed picture you can see my little Ollie!

Let him explore and get used to his new home :) He will grow into it. Chams are arboreal so they live in trees. Make sure there's branches And vines he can fully grasp. When I brought mine home he was a baby and used to climb all over the place. Even upside down on the top of the screen enclosure. Make sure he doesn't get burned by the lights. Add some more foliage for him as well. Make sure you have proper lighting and supplements and a good gut load recipe. Fill out the how to ask for help form if you have any questions. Also elevate the enclosure so you aren't towering above him. They should be able to look down on you. Be sure to not let any crickets roam free while your cham sleeps. Lastly don't use a night time bulb as chams need darkness to sleep, The light disrupts them. If your home gets below 50 degrees at night you can use a ceramic bulb that emits heat but no light. Try to stick with a 12 hour on 12 hour off light schedule. I apologize if you already knew some of these things just want to make sure since you're a new owner and I wish I was told these things when I got my first cham since the pet stores don't know or don't tell you these things.

@Ogden99 I think you are going to get into trouble if you try to divide the cage. You can fix the bottom and lay it on its side. If you keep it upright, pad the bottom. You can use towels or wad up paper towels. They can get hurt falling on hard cage floors.

The size of the cage is fine he'll grow into that fast. I would highly suggest a large live plant for that tho and not just those fake ones. Try getting an Umbrella Plant (Schefflera or Heptapleurum) to put in the middle, it will keep the humidity correct as well as give him something to drink off of and hide in.

I have a Golden Pothos growing in my cage for my cham Ghost. He sleeps towards the front of the plant close to door literally every night hiding his face behind leaves cause he's grown accustomed to my schedule compared to his. I started out with the smallest cage and with 4-6 months bought a medium, large m, and extra large cage. There's nothing wrong with buying a cage your cham can grow into, I'm currently trying to but and XXL cage for my cham due to the fact he wanders the same path everyday and is beginning to stress out about that. (If you look to the left top corner of the plant you can see my cham.)

So you're saying he's fine in an 18x18x36 inch cage even as a baby? I just worry that the crickets have too much place to go so he can't eat... and Ollie generally stays up near the heat lamp before I sectioned it, so the crickets would stay at the bottom. Should I take the mesh out and make it one big cage again? Thank you so much for the reply earlier too!

18x36 is about the size a baby should have at least, that is still too small for a full sized veiled. Their eyesight is amazing, they hunt in huge trees, he will be able to find crickets. You can use a cup feeder as well to monitor his eating and for convenience.

You're saying 18x36 is the correct size for a baby? I had bought that one bc the guy at my local store said that would last his whole life... so later on I'd have to go even bigger?

yeah I wouldn't personally go any lower than 18x18x36 for a baby. definitely too small for an adult. I have an 18x18x36 I use for my young panther, but no way a permanent home.

"later on" being around 6-7 months most likely. Honestly, people don't like to hear this and it sometimes comes off offensive, but i don't intend that when I say, assume the pet stores know nothing or don't care to tell you the truth(they're trying to make a sale). I've made the mistake of listening to them many times in the past.

Thank You so much! I think I'm going to take the screen out and rearrange everything to how it used to be so he has the whole cage. and ill definitely move his cage higher so he can have the high grounds compared to me.
