Hi, im from england and ive always had an inrest in keeping chameleons, im not a begginer with herps, as i spend all my time looking up every reptile i could ever keep on the internet. I have always been intrested in my mates veiled chameleon and fasicnated by it. I also keep fish, a crested gecko, a snake and a tortoise that was given to me. I dont really have much of a limit i can spend on a vivarium and equipment, but im not willing to spend hundreds on buying a selectivly bred chameleon. I was wondering if it would b suitable to keep a panther chameleon, indoors in england year round (with the exception of hot and sunny days and in the evening when the temperature drops bringing them inside) in a screen vivarium, its a central heated room that is only used during the day and at night for sleeping and cleaning other reptiles. Basicly every ambient requirment i think i could meet, but ive heard allot about screen vivs not being suitable in colder climates. I would love to hear that i could keep this amazing speicies and that other people in the UK have kept them aswell :)

Great question and great link!

I'm so wanting a Cham and have for a while. It's a matter of talking my brother into it lol

As for the screen vivs, I hadn't thought of them not being suitable for the Uk  are there any on the forum who do successfully keep their Cham's in screen vivs? Or do most of the UK folk use screen and panel ones? (I know that glass isn't great due to stale air and reflections so had already ruled against using that).

Also if I was to get a Cham (hopefully when not if), I'd also like a male Panther, or possibly a male Yemen, although I know these get fairly big and I'm always worried about the size of the viv for them.

The ones I see for sale in the US (Screen ones) don't seem that big to me? I read somewhere that a good size for Cham's mentioned above would be:
36" 36" 48" and I see none for sale that size? Or are smaller ok?

Sorry to hijack the thread, it's just I thought my questions might also be on your mind too Dave :)

Wow just read the links Sandra. He gives a very convincing story regarding notusing full screen vivs and I'm quite surprised. Especially with the casual mention of how the Europeans do it that way!

It's made me totally rethink full screen vivs for the UK (North UK for me too).

Any other views on this!?

I keep quadricornis and melleri along with calyptratus in the east of england and have no trouble whatsoever......go for it !

Sounds good! I guess setting the house central heating thermostat in the same room as the viv would be a good idea!? Would keep that room at a min temp of your choosing :D

More good news... apart from the fact my brother seems to have really put his foot down on a Cham

I can't complain since he agreed to a Bearded Dragon and loves it, but he's not falling for the idea of a gorgeous Cham and I'm gutted!!!

I'm going to keep working on him, but it may have to be somthing I wait for, until my gf and I have tied the knot and got our own place lol

Ahh that's to bad(kick your bro out and move the cham in!!!)I live in N.Ireland and keep my female veiled in a glass vivarium with a mesh top(would love to have a screen cage though!)they are great animals, fascinating isn't the word!but i suppose you could use this time to plan everything that you will need for him/her...they are worth the wait!Good luck

Thanks ronnie!

Perhaps when the house is a little more towards where we want it to be lol

When he's satisfied with the decorating etc... he might be swayed then :D *fingers crossed*
