Experimental Enlcosures Pt.1

[Solid Snake]

I recently needed to update my outdoor enclosures, and this is what I came up with.

I made one for Donahue as a test, and then made this one for Stella as clean as I could, and took pics of the construction.

They are ugly, but they work great, are super easy, super cheap, and can be made to any size or shape desired.

Yep, they work . Nicely done, and that reminds me - I'm going to have to get working on my outdoor enclosures for this year soon, they have outgrown the little ones I got away with last year............

ya put it where a burn barrel was? we just ripped one out cause my dad ran into it with the truck. like a pro.

what i love about burn barrels is all the moss that grows in the ash, but im a sucker for moss.

nice if youre not using fiberglass screen, i mean sure it should keep up for now buuut.

fiberglass screen fallls apart like it is its job. plus the crap is toxic.

its just crappy craptastic crap.

based on the pics for me its hard to tell. if it is aluminum great but that "charcoal" crap well it looks like crap. you need to spend an extra buck on the straight "black" by new york wire....

try a place that specializes in windows/doors i learned you cant special order the good crap through homedepot

oh and you need more shade, holy crapola, if you plan on keeping em in there 24/7 they need some crap to hide in. thats just over exposure.

i learned real quick they only need like 2 hours direct sunlight in the morning or the evening.

so summer housing goes in under the trees.

hey have i gotten the record for most uses of the term "crap" in one post? a smaller gauge chicen wire does well if youre not extecting babies, that way the bugs can get in......but ya wanna keep those fireflies out.

It was there already, and I dont use it.

Yes, moss is neat.

Its just the biggest roll of aluminum screen I could find, 4'x50'.
The aluminum is folded/rolled tightly, around the deer fencing, as well as being impaled on it, so it holds to it.

They have shade, although I dont expect most the plants to live long, like the pothos, and parlor palms. Im currently looking for more plants and such. They stay out there 24/7 for the most part. It does not get that hot here, and they get plenty of mists a day.
I truly appreciate the concern though.

Yeah, I was originally thinking about something like Seeco does, but did not want to just use the hardware cloth, so that it would be "bug proof".
I thought Id cover the HDcloth with screen, but that seemed to "dense" of a layering. The deer fencing is easy to work with, and give it structure/shape.

These things are almost 6' tall, and have already weathered a few storms fine. I was going to drive posts down the sides, and anchor them to them, to provide support. I dont think they need it, but Ill still likely do it.

ficus gets HUGE! in the summer outdoors.

too bad they arent perennial. ive used maple and sassafras but they just grow too damn fast.

like ive said a million time before i WISH i could find someone selling mulberries. gonna go see if audubon society sells em. they just sent us 10 trees for a $10 donation. maybe since i literally live 3 min away froun "Audubon" PA i can get some perks.

and gj solid i just bury my indoor cages into the ground becuae i have an excess. maybe this time a windstorm wont blow it 5 blocks away, cobblestones?

The cages look great snake, I've been thinking about doing something like this. Also deku: coastalsilkworms may not have silkworms for sale right now but they do have mulberry trees! At least they did last time I looked.
