Chameleon Info:
Species: Panther Chameleon, Male, ~1 year. We have had him since Xmas last year
Handling: My daughter will handle him about 1 time a day maybe 2. No going outside now as winter
Feeding: Used to feed primarily crickets but about 3 months ago stopped eating them. Would eat green worms and superstorms but now has stopped eating them as well. Now eating nothing except when we force feed him.
Supplements: Repticalcium without D3 2 times a week and will give the Miner-all with D3 twice monthly. He was also on Herptivite Mutlivitamins 1 time a week but I have changed to Reptivite as the Herptivite did not have Vit A.
Watering: Mistking with distilled water every 2-3 hours for 30 seconds to try to keep catch humidity up higher. Added a dripper with distilled water to give him water to drink. Not seen much drinking if at all last week. Vet game him SQ fluids last week and I did same today
Fecal: Not pooping much lately but which I have seen before it has been gelatinous and white on outside with dark firmer stool in middle.
Cage Info:
Cage Type: Screen cage 24x24x48. 2 days ago I put a shower curtain around 3 sides to help increase humidity and decrease drafts. It also was raised off the ground several days ago onto a table.
Lighting: UVB light is from a reptisun 5.0 bulb. Basking light is a Zoomed Daylight Blue 150w but it keeps burning out so I now have a 100w and a 60w (will change to 100w tomorrow) to create wide warm basking area. Basking spot is 39 inches from bottom of cage. Several branches in area for different level basking spots. I also have 2 other lights that are phillips bulbs that put out almost no heat but do give 6500k colors so the plants get appropriate light. Nightime I use a Zoomed Nightime 60w bulb. Temp at basking spot is 90F. Center of cage is 71-76F depending on misting. Measured temp in center of cage is by digital therm. At top by simple zoomed temp gauge. He gets light about 12 hours a day but often by 5 pm he is already in middle of cage ready for sleep.
Humidity: This area has been difficult. Most of the time humidity has been to low in the high 30s to 40s unless pretty soon after misting. This is why I added the shower curtain and increased the misting schedule. Measured in back middle of cage digitally. Humidity varies greatly between misting's and something I am trying to monitor more closely.
Plants: I have 2 pathos plants, 2 ficus plants, an Areca Palm and one other plant that I can't remember the name of but I did check at the time that is was chameleon safe.
Placement: Cage is in a room off our main living room so it does get noise and traffic from our main living space. But not to much. Cage is about 30inches off the ground. We do have a ceiling fan we run frequently in main room which might create a small draft towards him?
Location: We are located in Chico, California. Very hot summers and fairly cold winters.
Situation. He used to be a great eater when young. Then seemed to decrease and become picky and for a while would not eat at all. Then started to eat only superworms and Horned Green Worms. Currently he has not eaten except when force fed for the last 2+ weeks. Also about same time he started having discharge from eyes especially his left eye. Took him to the vet and started on oflaxacin eye drops and Ceftazidime injections and given fluids and blood test which did not show much (but cost $660!) still not eating and eye not better so changed to Tobramycin eye drops and added Baytril injections. I also gave him SQ fluids today of 2 cc's D51/2NS and 1cc LR. Additionally at least once a day I will flush the eyes gently with lukewarm distilled water and often will get some mucus out of the eyes. Lately he has not even been making the trip up to bask and we have to move him there which is very troubling.
Still not seeming to make the turn to get better which is concerning. Myself and family are out of country starting Tuesday for 8 days and Vet will board him but looking for advice. Worry that we will just keep floundering as we are and not making headway.
One question is that could the phillips 6500k bulb be hurting his eyes? I use that to help plants stay healthy but am just wondering if could be causing issue?
Here are some pics of Leo's eyes. Of note he did start to shed today which i think is encouraging?
