Eye mutation

Anybody ever have a baby hatch out with eyes like this? It's going on 3 weeks now and this baby is catching food item, grow at same rate as others in clutch. I've only seen this in one other chameleon before. Picture 1 and 2, are the eyes in question. Picture 3 is hatch mate, with normal eye coloration.

Sorry but I have no experience with the eye problem. For me it is a cute little thing, if it can see and catch it's prey, I would not worry.

I can't tell with the pics but are the pupils the same size? It looks like the pupils are the same size, and that its just the skin growing over the eye didn't develop fully over the eye. I have never seen this either. Is this the second ever chameleon you have seen with this? Same parents or different?

freaky eyes

freaky, looks like glue on monster eyes from some 60s sci-fi movie, if it can see well enough to eat and the eyes are otherwise healthy, there is no reason it cant grow up to be a thriving cham. other than that, never seen it before. sorry, i know its not much help, or the response you are looking for.

Eye want it!

Okay silly puns aside, that's really interesting. Looks like the eye-hole-thing didn't cover the eye as stated above. Maybe it's a new designer line of Surprised and Wide-Eyed Chameleons.

As long as the ittle one can still suck his eye in and close it to clean it out I don't there will be a problem. I have not seen it before but generally if a hatchling has eye problems that are even mildly serious they are difficult to deal with/feed. That one looks healthy and since he's eating fine I'd think its probably just a cosmetic problem. No real functionality is lost if it closes. Still super cute though :)

Steve, Ive hatched a baby that had one eye that was similar to this. The eye stayed closed most of the time and always seemed very dry despite frequent misting. I ended up loosing him because he just wasnt putting on the weight he needed.

I have to admit the first thing that came to mind was lens integrity.
1. light sensitivity;
2. keeping eye moist, clear;
3. ability to thrive due to such factors.

You may want to consider specialized nursery care. Albeit, I have nothing to back that up with. Wish you and yours the best.

I agree with nightcrawler. I have never had it happen to a new born, but have had it happen to an adult which had prolonged eye problems(which eventually cleared up), but one of the eyes looked similar to your baby after everything was over and done.

Seen it twice. Once in a little female I hatched a year ago. The eyes didn't seem to bother her but she eventually had a tongue injury that made it impossible to eat. Not sure why she was not quite formed like that as the rest of the clutch was totally normal. Also had a clutch of quads once with weird, incompletely formed eyelids that I do blame on temperatures getting too high. Hopefully yours makes it. Would be interesting to see as a grown adult.

Sorry, I do not have any experience with anything like this, but just out of curiosity...did they eyelid not fully develop or did it roll under. I couldn't really tell from the pictures, but it would be interesting to know what exactly happened to them. Keep us updated on his progress!!

I know what it is, when he was hatching out you must have spooked him when you got him out of the container, that's why he has a permanent startled look on his face! :eek: :D:p lol jk, how he grows up to be ok and not let the eye issue effect him

Update on Marty Feldman

Took a couple of pictures of the guy with crazy eyes today. He's not growing, so he might be doomed. But still active and feeding.
