Fecal Test Postive for Trichomonas Protozoa

My 8 month old (108g) ambilobe came back positive from his first fecal test. I've had him for about 4 weeks. The only reason he went in was for a general exam, so no other health issues that I'm aware of.

The vet is recommending metronidazole (flagyl)...is that a good first line of attack to help? From what I read it could cause some neurological/liver issues if not dosed right. Thanks.

The number of eggs or parasites is the number on the entire slide (not
per field) for each parasite reported...
1 seen = 1 egg or parasite seen on entire slide
1+ = 2-to-4 eggs or parasites (few)
2+ = 5-to-10 eggs or parasites (small)
3+ = 11-to-50 eggs or parasites (moderate)
4+ = >50 eggs or parasites (many)

It is recommended to treat as the vet has suggested. Flagyl is often used on chameleons with no problems.

I have used flagyl (metronidazole) several times on different chameleons over the years with no problems. Your little guy should be fine.

Thank your both. It's a new vet so I'm still feeling him out. I will be calling the morning to get the meds. Gotta love being a nobbie ha.

Really appreciate the help. : )

I administered his first dose a few minutes ago. The Care Resource section on this forum was helpful. It was a little stressful for the both of us and I was super nervous being my first time giving him meds orally. We both survived lol.

I have him back in his cage with the dripper going and going to see if he wants a dubia. Thank goodness the meds were under $20 : ).

I wanted to thank you for the input. Jaeger and I got the hang of giving him the meds on day 2-7 and he was a champ. His follow up fecal was negative and he put on about 20g since his first vet visit a few weeks ago.

I'm thinking we'll do another fecal in 6 months to make sure things continue on the up and up. He didn't show any signs of having a parasite so I would encourage those that have never had a fecal test done to get one....I'm sure glad I did.

I'd make sure I cleaned the cage well to so he won't get them back again.

Will do. I did a wipe down but nothing close to a deep cleaning. On Friday or Saturday he'll be moving into his brand new 2x2x4 cage that I put together last nite. Right now I'm trying to figure out how I want to setup drainage since I am adding a second mistking nozzle to the bigger cage. So many great ideas on this forum...choices-choices.
