Feeding Superworms Cheaply!

Hey all,

I'm sure many of you out there keep a superworm colony. As you well know, they eat a ton. The most common food for them is Oats and Wheat Bran.

I got tired of paying ~$5/lb for Wheat Bran at the grocery store, so I found a solution:

They sell wheat bran in 40 lb sacks at most feed stores. And if they don't have it, they can get it. I just bought 40 lbs of wheat bran for $15.00. That's 13-1/3 times cheaper than the grocery store!

Happy worming!

Thank you! That's a heck of a lot cheaper! I'll have to ask the feed store if they carry it. I never even thought of that.

Just be careful - I did that for awhile, however millers (moths) would sprout from the bran and infest my house. I just switched back to buying oatmeal in bulk at Sam's club - 2-5 or 10 pound bags, in one box. I don't know if it's because I'm down here in Florida where it really never freezes and that's why the millers appeared, but they hatched, then burrowed into EVERYTHING in my cham room, and then made coccoons and the cycle continued. Just something to think about, but I hope it works out for you!

I just got some superworms and went to winco to buy wheat bran. It was only like $0.35 / lb. Are you guys using something different then what I got?

I do this also - buy bran intended for horses, cows etc. in big bags. I store most it in my chest freezer to kill off bugs (it is not human grade, but that's fine since its not being eaten by humans).

same with alfalfa, crushed barley, kelp powder, etc.

yay - you just saved me having to ask what would produce those tiny moths- and why is my house full of them - lol - they are from the worms  - but, the babies LOVE them- I spend every AM chasing these things down in the house to feed them- I will just go to the feed store, and get the bran :p and put it in a screen cage - lol - just want my husband wants to see- ANOTHER bug breeding cage  :p
