ff CULTURES

How do I start one? How long does it take to start to get enough to feed baby veields? and a few baby hoes?

One cup of ff. Probably 10-15 deli cups. I use joshsfrogs ff food, aspen shavings. Disperse the cup of ff throughout the others. The warmer it is the faster they reproduce. I keep the cups on mite shelf paper to keep mites out too. Some mites can destroy cultures. I think joshsfrogs has some youtube videos on it.

Where do you get your ff? I cant find them in stores, and i cant find them at mulberryfarms.

You would need to order a culture from someone, either a fresh one or a ready to feed one. From that you can start new ones. The smaller melanogaster flies will be ready to feed in about 1-2 weeks depending on the culture media you use and the amount of flies you use to start. The larger Hydei flies will take 2-3 weeks with the same variables. I normally sell both from my website www.fancyguppies.net, but with the holidays and eveything i sold out and havent set up new ones yet. i'll have them back up and ready in about another week or so.

I started a couple of my own in empty jam jars from my original culture and yesterday I thought I would them them go in Monty's viv as there weren't many in there. Well, it turns out that there were LOADS! I left the cover off while I had breakfast and came back to find poor Monty inundated with the things!

Well I wont need them for a while. the veields and hoes havent even mated yet, and proably wont be bred until this summer.
I just am planning ahead of time.
DO you bred both kinds of flies?
Cuz the small melanogaster ones would be great for baby hoehnellis. and the largder hydeis would be great for the baby veileds.
My two boys are going to breed to Okiroo's two girls (we hope) sometime this summer.
Since i dint know how long it took to get a large enough colony going (since dubias can take a few months) figured id ask now.

But if its only going to take a few weeks. then I have plenty of itme.

Yes you have plenty of time. I do sell both the Hydei and the Melanogaster in 32oz ready to feed culture containers. There are other people on the forum that sell them too if you was to get one right away and play around with it to get practice. Dave from small pet feeders is one of them i think.

i might do that. How much for the hydeis? my hoehnelli now is old eough to eat the bigger ones, but hes still on smaller crickets.
Also, what do I feed them to keep them alive? anything special to keep them breeding?

Awww. poor little dinocham.

Holy cow that link was perfect!

Now my next question....
how on earth do i get them out of the tub to feed off?
Put them in the Fridge for 10-30 min makes them really slow...then you can just tap the lid, take it off and dump them into the dusting cup. Easy Peasy:D:D

oh well. you just have answers to everything now dont ya? ;)

Thanks a bunch! Cnat wait to have to start these! i want to hear the pitter patter of baby feet!

I bought one fruit fly culture and the kit at the show in early November. I currently have over 18 cultures going from that one and have been feeding hungry babies with them for the past month. I've had to buy more supplies to keep them going ...

They are super easy and prolific!

Good I hope so! Cuz im going to have half a clutch of veileds to feed, and half a clutch of hoehnellis to feed.

Be prepared to have them eat you out of your house lol!:D
My one clutch goes through like 3000 crickets a week!

Oh i know.
Fortunatly, im splitting the clutch with Okiroo from the veiled breeding and the hoehnelli. so its not quite as bad! lol

 can't wait to see some baby pics :)

Sadly, they are a long way off. they arent even going to be bred until this coming summer. probably meeting in june to give the boys to okiroo to keep for a few weeks to mate them. then of course, laying hatching/birthing, etc
so prob ntot ill the end of this year beginning of next will their be babies. :(
