Finally got my first panther female

I have heard to wait one year before a breeding. As far as traffic by her cage, a lot of people will put a blanket around the cage to give privacy and put a web cam in the cage so they can see how she's doing and when they are finished without disturbing them.

But wouldn't a blanket make it feel like it was always bed time? Or do you mean putting it over one side of the cage just so she won't be seen? I'm not trying to pick a fight or anything I'm just genuinely curious. I never had a female.

I don't think they mean over the top, just around the sides for privacy with the lights still on. Yeah I bet it would make them sleep if it was dark.

If you don't want her to lay eggs for now, keep the spot low (I guess recommended was high 70s or maybe low 80s? Not sure) and feed her less then she will eat, but enough to let her develop. I sadly don't remember the recommended amound of feeders that can be given daily.
My girl layed an infertile clutch as soon as she became receptive for the first time, 15ish eggs. She was around 7 months old. I did have a highly heat spot and fed her A LOT though. And even after I learned about keeping metabolism low to prevent egg developement, I couldn't manage to stop her from laying new clutches every 3-4 months. I guess I did not dare to keep her temps low enough, because I feared digestion issues.

Got my 4 month female and have her all settled in. I'll post a picture of her cage. I have about 14-15 inches of soil mix I made with plants, a couple rocks, cork bark, and leaf litter. Also have isopods and springtails.

So my understanding is they have similar care as the males with a place to lay obviously. Same feedings every day with an emphasis on the calcium? I'm wondering, how do you guys do maintenance when they start digging. I know you're supposed to stay out of sight, but considering my female will be in a room with my other males, I'll still have to go in there at some point.

Any other differences with the females I should be made aware of? I planned to have the basking spot a little lower.

Breed her around a year, correct? How early do they begin to lay before that? Once they do lay, feed a lot of dusted foods I assume. Perhaps liquid calcium?

Hey James.. glad to see shes settling in.. as far as females at the age she is I treat them the same as my males.. once she's closer to a year I'd cut back on food especially if she's getting plump. My females tend to eat way more than males and will get obese if you offer them too much food. As for breeding.. 1 year is the cookie cutter safe number. I really go more for size.. I've bred females as early as 8-9 months.. but they were all over about 70 grams.. if she starts showing receptive colors and is north of 65g I wouldn't hesitate to breed her at 8-9 months. I weighed her before she left and she was only around 20g so she has a ways to go.. but she's right around the age she should hit a big growth spurt. The tree candy lines tend to be smaller. Shauna actually told me she's had females at adult age only weigh around 50g and still lay healthy fertile clutches. From whay I've seen so far though I don't think these girls will be that small.. I have 2 girls from the first clutch i kept that are about 7 months and already showing receptive colors and in the 55-60g weight range. Extra calcium leading into breeding and egg laying. The easiest way to get them to lay I have a 55 gallon trash can i fill up about half way with an organic soil/ play sand mixture and put a plant right in the middle some sticks for perches and leaf litter on the floor.. just set it up as a temporary cage.. I cut out the top of the can lid and make it screen so I can have uvb and a basking light on it.. this method works great and the solid sides give her privacy. I'll usually move the female to the can about 3 weeks after the mating or until she stops eating (they usually stop eating a week or 2 before laying). So make sure you get her lots of calcium and water leading up to that as they are the most important things for her.. after laying make sure she has access to extra water.. once she starts eating i usually give a feeder with a drop of calcium glubonate and vitamin a. No need to go overboard just a drop.. she should bounce back great.. think i covered most of it.. if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

@distortionz thank you Shaun! I just saw that trash can method on CBP. Seems like a good idea, so I'll know when she's ready by her refusal to eat then?

As for vitamin A do you mean liquid? So to be clear once e accepts food again, add a drop of each on an item and then go back to the usual supplements(extra calcium and water though)?

Just making sure I got it right.
