Fired Up

Almost every time I take my panther out, he always fires up real colorful. And I really notice it when I try and put him back in his cage (he never wants to go back in) Is this normal? Am I stressing him out? Haven't heard or seen this before. Every time he comes out, it is at his own will. I never force holdings.

edit: He also never hisses, gapes, or try's to bite.

My guy gets out of his cage by himself too and only started doing it this past weekend. He doesn't get any more fired up than normal, but definitely doesn't seem to want to go back in once he's out hah. He's about 4-5 months old and may just need a bigger cage.

Take jannb's advice :)

My youngest panther was like that, he would fire up and but also get pissy when he had to be put back in his cage. He prefers to be out and never liked his baby/juvi cage or his big cage no matter what the set up with plants, vines etc.

I got a fiscus tree and secured a biovine between it and his cage (sort of like a bridge) so that he could have access to both and now he spends a good deal of his time out and is happier. He does prefer to sleep in his cage and he eats there as well.

How old is he and what size cage do you have?

I have his cage on a big table with jade trees all around his cage outside. So I take a biovine and connect it to the jade trees from his ficus inside his cage and let him roam the jade trees. I just have to supervise him though because he is outside and something weird happened today. He crawled all the way over to the last jade tree (total of 4, 2 foot jade trees) and got on a low limb and looked like he was about to jump. As soon as I got up and tried to pick him up before he fell, he got super pissed, gaped his mouth and swayed back and forth. He has never done that to me before and I handle him quite often on his own terms. He stopped as soon as I got near him and he let me pick him up. Very weird.

Did you make any fast, sudden movements when you went to catch him? That could have just caught him off guard and scared him as you were not handling him on his terms.

They do and can jump if they are off somewhere, I have been completely freaked out a few times by mine jumping off trees and trying to go on an adventure but they seem to flatten out and not harm themselves. Mine went through this for a while as he was convinced on checking out to see if there were any girlfriends for him behind the sofa and pot plants across the room

Yeah. I really think he was going to take the leap of faith. It was a good 3 and a half foot fall. Ill probly end up getting some sort of big ficus for him instead of my mom's small jade's.

Yeah.....3 and a half foot is about what mine jumped. I got so paranoid after he did it (he could have gotten down via the fiscus) that I got every spare pillow in the house and put on the floor around his cage so he would have a soft landing....

You have pot plants across the room?;)

Lol! Not those types of plants.....ferns and an umbrella tree! Maybe I am not using the right words...:p
