Foot issue/wound care

Hi Chamily! One of my little buddies Basil has some kind of foot infection. His vet is out of the office and his appt is Nov 5th. In the mean time I have him set up in a temporary enclosure inside. I have been doing a diluted iodine soak once a day (as long as he will tolerate) and an antibacterial/fungal ointment.

I noticed this post shed as I was taking some loose shed off (I do examine him frequently since he is older). Part of his foot did not shed but had a kind of crusty layer. I did take a wet qtip to try and clean it and that is why the scales are black. His skin was oozing a little blood and now this morning I noticed his other back foot was oozing a little blood too (the scales look normal). Does anyone have any other advice on what I can do in the mean time? Thanks!!

Pics are post soak so it’s a little discolored.

I don’t have any advice, but im just here to wish you both luck with a quick and easy recovery!

I would try to get him into the vet sooner... With what I am seeing there I would be really concerned about waiting an extra week in case he needs to be on antibiotics as well. Things can get so much worse so quickly with these guys. And Basil is one of your older boys right? So age would be a concern for me as far as his ability to fight off infection. The older they get they just seem to have a harder time with it. At least that is how I feel after seeing so many threads over the years.

Thank you, ladies! Yes, he is my oldest and I can tell over the past year his immune system is just not as robust. This particular "toe" has had issues in the past that have resolved with just basic first aid. It's been about 4yrs since the last problem when he lost the nail, and it grew back. As far as getting him in sooner, I am hesitant to bring him to another vet. My vet is great and has connections with some very experienced vets that have treated chameleons. I actually took him in to see her a couple weeks ago for some stuck shed in his eye, but I did not notice this problem. :(

Maybe keep calling to see if they have any cancellations. I understand not wanting to go to a new vet. It is hard enough to just find 1 you can trust.

I will call back tomorrow but I think they said she is out of the office. But I have good news, his foot is not as puffy and he hasn’t been dangling it. Hopefully it doesn’t get worse!

Just want to update this thread...Vet visit went well! I was not able to get an appointment sooner, but his foot has been improving. Took some X-rays to make sure there was not any internal bone infection since his nail bed looked pretty bad. It looked good and for his age he has no arthritis, so that is a plus! Skin scraping did not note anything fungal or bacterial, so I will continue to treat it with ointment.

That’s really good news!
