Today I found a praying mantis outside on my screen door. Are there any good websites to find out what kind it is? Does anyone know what kind lives in Maryland? If I go outside to find more where should I look, will i even have a chance in finding more? Any help will be great. Thank you

Here in new jersey it is illegal to handle and or kill praying mantis' i see them every once and while but cant touch them. shucks

So... you're taking your chameleon for a walk.... just minding your own business.... your cham's tongue flies out.... he chomps... chomp chomp..... Did YOU touch the mantis. I think not!
<G>

Seriously though....
There's usually a good reason for nature restrictions. Do you know why?

They are protected here in N.Y. also, they are a beneficial insect. I bought 3 egg sacks last spring hatched them out and released them in my wooded yard. I See them all the time now.

That seems weird wonder why. and how can they inforce that.

I'm surprised that you haven't heard of the New Jersey Special-Ops Mantis Protection unit! The other day my friend got taken away because he was seen looking at a mantis. What's "inforce" anyways?:p

He is still out there don't worry. It was huge and mean looking so I didn't want to get close to it. New bugs that I haven't touched yet freak me out a bit. It looked pretty amazing though, I've never seen one up close. Are they legal in Maryland? Where can you find out?

They really dont enforce it but if a police officer or spca or animal control see you handleing one or killing one you get a pretty big fine from what i hear.

I always thought that there was just one species of mantid in NY, NJ PA, DEL and MD. IO could be wrong, but I personally have only seen the "common" praying mantids in these areas.

I used to buy the pods and raise them for feeders. Chams go NUTS over them!

LMAO, that is the funniest, Mantis police....I don't live in the US so it is quite amusing.

If I find one, it's food for my guy...

As FaunaBgirl says "So... you're taking your chameleon for a walk.... just minding your own business.... your cham's tongue flies out.... he chomps... chomp chomp..... Did YOU touch the mantis. I think not!" lol, prove it in court.
PLEASE!!!!:D

In Louisiana there are several types of mantis. The two most common are a very large bright green type that can't fly do to its large butt and a very slender brown flying type that I usually only see in the spring. Have never tried to feed them to my chams though. I have heard of people ordering the juveniles before on the net to feed to their chams. Good luck. David

In arizona during summer, you can just go out to a bush and if you look good enough you'll find those tiny brown ones and the huge green ones. i once kept a green one and had him for a few months. but then i let him go, he was free roaming on a fake ficus tree of ours and he never flew away.
