Free silkworms - KCMO

As usual, Ferdinand ate about 6 silkworms and is done with them. Spoiled rotten princess :)

If you're in the KCMO area and can meet me downtown sometime this Monday or Tuesday morning, I'm happy to share 1 to 1.5 inch silkworms, about 25 total. Send me a PM.

I have a few more that I'll let change to moths. Ferds will eat a few of the months.

Just too generous! :D Let them all turn to moths. I love to watch my guys when I put the moths in their cages. They do that lick their chomps thing once or twice, and then bolt for it. Never skip anything that flies. If it flies it dies. If it crawls, it falls.:D Nice of you to give away the caviar of chameleon food. You should trade them for a pair of Jimmy Choos. :D

What is your secret to success with silkworms?

Getting them to cocoon? I don't do anything , actually. Once they get big enough, they will start spinning silk on their own. I'm not breeding them ( tried once WAY too much work for a worm my Jax doesn't really like).

Seriously though, he will even only eat a few of the moths, so f anyone wants them let me know ASAP. I am leaving town for work tomorrow. I'd rather they get eaten than thrown away.

Well, if I lived near you, I would stop by for sure, with deli cup in hand :)

Never had much luck breeding them myself, too much work.
I just buy the eggs.
It is a bit tricky keeping the hatchlings alive long enough to transfer them to something bigger, when they are about 1/2'' long.

They do go through a lot of chow!!
But all my guys, except Noogie, who will to touch any worm, loves them.
So I guess its worth the effort.

Just getting them alive and keeping them long enough to feed
I do the 2 day shipping from Coastal Silkworms which has a live arrival guarantee. I also buy the chow. Every day or so, give them about 1 Teaspoon of prepared chow per 5-7 silkworms. I really don't do anything else and very rarely have a death. If anything, they grow too fast.
