My husband and his friend found this guy at work today. They put it in a small bird cage (yes it is that big) and brought it home for me to photograph. If you know what it is we are interested in learning about it.

Actually I just found it. :)

Said to be the most common of North America's giant silk moths, the Polyphemus was named after the one-eyed giant of Greek mythology because of the large eyespots on its hindwings. The spots on all four wings are transparent.

Your moths is male, by the way. His giant frilly antennae are super sensitive to the pheromones the females release and he can smell them miles away.

Wow really cool. So I was reading that they only live a few days. I kinda want to keep him and then frame him when he dies. I dont know.

Beautiful photography and moth! I would lean towards keeping him. It is the most common of North America's giant silk moths. It's gorgeous.

Thank you. I love getting the opportunity to photograph new things. :)

I am thinking I am going to keep him. We have been watching him all night and he has not moved one bit. He seems totally content on the stick my husband gave him. He put some leaves in there and some green plant (dont know what kind) that he was on in there. My guess it that he is loving it since it is getting pretty cold for us the last few nights. :) Well Florida cold anyway.

Set him free to live his last moments as he was meant to be

I was thinking I was going to but they took the branch that he was on and everything and he seems totally content. They misted a little bit of water onto one of the leaves a couple of hours ago and we got to watch it drink. It was pretty amazing. I was going to take pics but I didnt want to disturb him too much.

How big is it? I cant really tell from the pictures...

I am about 5'5'' and when I spread all of my fingers out he is still bigger than that. My husband is saying the wing span is somewhere between 7 and 8 inches across. He is really big. He is literally in a bird cage and he is too fat to fit through the bars if he wanted to get out.

maybe he only flies at night?
It is very neat. I understand the temptation to keep it ;)

Good point. I am gonna shut the lights off in here for a while and if for some reason he starts to become more active I will let him go. I definitely dont want the whole week he is alive to suck. :)

WOW! He's pretty. Sad something so beautiful only lives a couple of days. Must be a busy couple of days in the nature. I know what I would do if I had only a couple of days... ;)

LOL Agreed!

I was surprised when I learned that. We thought he was really old.

Awesome! Great pics!! I'm designating u for repticon photographer for those who don't get to attend!!:D

Prety yes but its meat for the beast!!!!!!!!!!unless its toxic i don't know anything about moths other than the feeders we commonly use

In the summer moths here in the midatlantic region i see quite a few lunar moths those are very large ! When i first saw one bumping into the light outside i thought it was a bat at first glance they are really impressive.
