For small snakes I would stick with rosy boad, sand boas, or a western hognose. All are pretty easy to keep and you don't need to worry about high humidity. I'm a fan of heavier bodied snakes so those appeal to me. Other choices are ribbon snakes and garter snakes. There are a lot of choices out there but these just popped in my head as a good beginner snakes. I used to breed ball pythons and while they stay small and are usually completely docile, they can go off feed for months. This can be VERY stressful to someone who hasn't kept snakes.
