Good Starter Snake

For small snakes I would stick with rosy boad, sand boas, or a western hognose. All are pretty easy to keep and you don't need to worry about high humidity. I'm a fan of heavier bodied snakes so those appeal to me. Other choices are ribbon snakes and garter snakes. There are a lot of choices out there but these just popped in my head as a good beginner snakes. I used to breed ball pythons and while they stay small and are usually completely docile, they can go off feed for months. This can be VERY stressful to someone who hasn't kept snakes.

Another note, if you are interested in dart frogs message me. I have been keeping and breeding them for years.

the only reason i wouldn't recommend a western hognose is the slightly venemous properties. I know people hardly get bit by them but if they decide your food and latch on to your finger and chew for a bit your hurting pretty good

I've been bitten and haven't had any effects (feeding mistake). You would have to pretty much let it chew on you. I have tried to research many places and it's hard to come up with anything solid with their venom/rear fangs. To be 100% honest I wouldn't be concerned with it in the least as if they are indeed venomous there has never been any serious injuries as far as I know. I haven't heard of anyone having an anaphylactic reaction to a bite from one either (but I'm sure it's possible, although extremely rare).

I'm speaking from western hognose experience.

my western tagged on my once and chewed on me for 30-45 seconds before i could get her off. The next night (26-30 hours later) my arm was swollen from my fingers to the bottom of my bicep. Sorry to hear about your misfortune! My bite was from a male, which as you are aware I'm sure is a lot smaller than a female. He was probably around 18" long. So it was pretty hard for him to be able to bite me anywhere anyway. I definately got him off a lot faster than you got the female off (which is understandable size wise).

Even then you might have a more sensitive reaction to their venom than someone like me. Kind of hard to say.
