Grasshoppers

Today was the first day I went out and actually found some grasshoppers here in michigan in my secret spot and my chams went nuts. the pygmies love the, the panther love them, and everyone else loves them as well. I could feed them nothing but grasshoppers for a year straight and they would not tire of them. I guess its just cuz its a little more instinctive to eat a wild grasshopper than a domestic cricket. Not to mention I bet they taste alot better to a cham. Oh and your chams look great. Especially titan. he is sweet.

Thanks! My panther loves grasshoppers, but I couldnt get a full shot of him because he likes to be up over my head when he feeds. For some reason my pygs wont touch them.

Nice uthmoelleri! I used to get grasshoppers all the time but then they stopped showing up. We don't use pesticides, but maybe too many neighbors do...

Thanks! I've only seen one or two grasshoppers near my house also. They really do prefer them over anything else I offer.

Yeah I have not seen ANY yet in NJ. Send some our way!!!

I did find moths though. But didn't feed em. Too risky.

I've never considered Grasshoppers but now I'm inspired. Looks like I'm going on a hunt when I get home.

Not really, because straight from the field is when they are most nutritious. A healthy chameleons is able to tolerate some parasites, but a stressed chameleon or unhealthy chameleon will start to go downhill if they are infected with too many parasites. Just remember parasites alone are natural, but when stress is added to the mix, problems can arise.

I know more then a couple of people who have been keeping chams for quite some time who feed wild caught grasshoppers off during the summer months without too much of an issue. Pancur works wonders for certain worms and has little to no effect on your chameleon. I fed off wild caught grasshoppers all last summer and only one of mine came up positive for parasites in a fecal. I have fecals done every 2 months in the summer when I'm feeding wild caught mantis, stick bugs, dragonflies, cicadas, grasshopper, crickets, and whatever other bugs I can catch that are safe. The variety is unmatched by the commercial feeders. The only commercial feeders I keep in the summer are silkworms and hornworms. Everything else is wildcaught or offspring of wild caught bugs. My chameleons love the wild caught food and as long as the chams are healthy most parasites will not do much harm to your chameleon. Of course I would treat the parasites if they were found but I'm sure every wild caught chameleon has some type of parasite and they seem to be doing better out there than in our care so it can go both ways. But obviously if you know your cham has parasites treat them.
