Ficus are almost always going to drop their leaves - it's their way of adapting to different conditions. They drop their leaves and grow leaves more suited to their new conditions. It's a pain, but it doesn't mean they're dead!
Ficus allie is much better - look for them - ficus with long, tapering leaves.
Sheffelera will die if their roots are kept wet or too moist. Always. Let their roots stay wet, and they rot.
It's a very very bad idea to take advantage of the replacement policy of stores to the point of exploitation. It results in an increase in costs to the stores, and an increase in cost to us. plus it's just not right.
Besides - the plants you get from them are small. Keep them healthy for just a year, an dthey will be much bigger and more beautiful.
I bought some 13' ficus from a greenhouse last year that was going under. They bougth them as $5 ficus from Lowes 8-10 years earlier. Plus, they had been pruned back every year. Over 10' in less than 10 years.
