halogen bulb wattage and Temps

For those useing Halogen Basking bulbs what wattage are you using to maintain a good temp. Are they similar to condesent bulbs or do you use a higher or lower wattage?

Thanks !

I have found the halogens to be much hotter heat when using same wattage. I don't have these on my chams, but have used them on my beardies. So to maintain current temps, you'd most likely have to reduce the wattage on the halogen to obtain same temp.

Thank you , I am hoping that is the case. I want to reduce wattage and be a little more efficient. I like the idea of the better light spectrum as well.

yea, halogen r hotter overall.......I use 50w for my beardies and ackies...and at 6 inches from basking get 120-130 temps.
u could easily go 25w and get 90's at that distance

I know Dave uses them, Ryan. I had a couple... but they burned out and I haven't replaced them (with the same type of lamp, only because I haven't gone to look for them). I didn't have any issue using a 60W FLOOD, key word is flood. A spot will be VERY hot... a flood will diffuse enough that if you aren't keeping it directly on top of the basking spot you should be fine.

Ryan,

I use under cabinet puck halogen lights on all my cages. These bulbs create a hot spot that is much warmer than my montanes like or need but it’s only in a small area unlike regular incandescent bulbs that heats a larger area. Because the heat is only right under the bulb, I have a better thermal gradient in my cages and thus give my animals more options as to where they want to bask, eat, sleep etc. I think mine are 12W – I’ll check when I get home.

There are 3 and 5 pack kits in the lighting section at Ho Depot and Lowes that are uber cheap.

Very nice! , I love the idea. I am heading over to HD today. Thanks Trace!

Thanks Trace,

I went out and picked up a few of these lights. There ones I grabbed are 20watt. I have them on a few small LLL screen cages right now and they seem to be working nicely. Some creative positioning on the top of the cage I am able to achieve some really nice gradients. I am so happy. I am cutting my Basking light wattage by almost 25%.

Do you set them right on top of the cage? I can get perfect temps this way but it makes a hot spot on the mesh. I am thinking of hanging them somehow.

Any benefit or drawbacks to removing the UV filter on these lights? I don't have a way to measure UVA or really anything the halogen puts out. I figure leave it be but thought I would throw the question out there. Anyone have any idea?

Trace, are these MR16 bulbs? If so, they're super efficient, but relatively expensive up front, though they are supposed to last longer than non-halogens. I use the (35 watt) screw-on equivalents. What has their longevity been, in your experience, using those fixtures?

Cheers,

when i use heat which i dont do use a lot of, i use the zilla 25w night black light (not a blacklight ) it produces very gentile heat and almost no light, it will produce basking temps of about 85* about a foot below the bulb ,(depending on setup&cage material of course). heathttp://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=18316&rel=1

Why would you use a low-light (or no-light) source (other than as a supplement for a light-emitting heat source in very cold places and for low-land species)? Chameleons, like all other diurnal reptiles, respond to a combination of visible light and heat in order to thermoregulate.

I'm curious to know the application of your "night black light".

At home Depot there were $32 for a 5 pack. If you go to Ikea let me know the price I still need a few.

Wow, that's cheap. Are they MR16s?

Thanks, Ryan.

Hey Ryan or Trace. Any updates on these Halogen pucks?

I got a 25 watt and sitting it on top of the cage doesn't seem to warm up an area much at all.

Ryan did you remove the UV Filter on yours? Great idea by the way. Thought I'd resurrect this thread.
