Hand taming

haha! yeah I rarely take my dude out, he just doesn't appreciate it... Unless of course he's completely distracted by a fat super, then he seems to be okay with it.

Pan isn't even okay with it then! He immediately fires up at me, starts the tail flickering, and the lunge-biting. If there is food in my hand, he has to be in a "good" mood to even consider eating it before I leave the room. He's a butt, but he is really neat to watch.

I wouldn't say that every chameleon is handle-able. My veiled Pan throws a pretty huge hissy fit and usually still acts aggressive when he's out. I've only been able to ninja slide my hand under him a few times (narrowly missing the bite of doom, might I add.) I just dont take him out any more. It's not worth it.

So far, I have not had any aggressive chameleons or any other pet...well we do have a Kerry Blue Terrier and he is always after anything that moves, he does not like other animals...but he is good with people!

wow sounds like he's got some serious alpha male going on there. how old is Pan? I guess the hand distractions in Video 3 prob do nothing right? http://www.screameleons.com/How_To_Handle_Chameleons.htm

Nope. Once in a blue moon I can distract him to get behind him.

I believe he is 18-19 months?

Edit: oh wait, I think I'm way off. Maybe it's more like 15?

I like to associate my handling of Helios with happy things. I.e. taking him out to bask, occasionally for hand feeding superworms, and showers. If you can sort of train a cham to associate the handling this way, it may be more receptive.

Sorry, but chameleons can't hear you. They don't have ears, they feel vibration but thats it.don't think they enjoy your singing...

I think Chams along with all the animals of this world can sense energy coming from a person. Some people show their feelings with a hug, some with a gift, it's all in a person's intent.

Anyhow, maybe the cham can't "hear" the person, but if a person is willing to sing to a cham, maybe they can, in a sense, "feel" the love?

Lol. I don't think Pan cares if anything good happens after I take him out. He still violently attacks my hand like it's a demon with a thousand different methods of torturekilling chameleons and Pan is the defender of chameleons.

The only time he ever runs to me is when I make him take a shower. All my chame hate the shower with an intense passion that burns like a million suns!

Mozart, our veiled, hisses & carries on when we fetch him from his cage, but he seems totally content as soon as we get him away from his cage. The merchant I bought him from recommends taking him out more frequently, so I have been (2-3x a day). Admittedly, his behavior hasn't changed yet, but he is young (3-4 months) and we’ve only had him home since Christmas; I have HOPE!!!
BTW - there was a young veiled that reached his little hands out at everybody in that reptile store, but I couldn't afford him. All he wanted was to be out and held!

Im a first timer with a Cham, but I have raised almost every type of animal and have bred, raised, love, and show horses and dogs.
and from my opinion and only my opinion and personal experience, you receive what you give.
I love my new little guy, when I come to his cage, he literally comes running(hmmm, do they run?!) from whereever he is. I sing and hum to him and my neighbors now think I am "that" wacky lady on the street cause I sit with him in the sun humming:) he seems to like Michael Row Your Boat Ashore for some reason!

I also sing to my chameleon. My current veiled isn't crazy about it, but she knows it's dinnertime when the singing starts. However, my Jacksons (RIP) loved my singing! I don't care who doesn't believe she enjoyed it, I know she did. :)

I already noticed in my 3 months of ownership that he has indeed become more chill with me, he is no longer affraid of my hand, so they do get uses to humans.

But make no mistake, "tame" is not the correct word. Its easy to see certain behavior has signs of friendship. For example, when i take my cham out of its cage and put him on the bed, and and walk around the bed, he will chase me around to try and climb me, he does it every time. But the only reason he does it is cause he is not used to my bedroom and im the only thing he can recognize. Im new to chams, but not to reptiles and I think they just dont tame.
