Handling my veiled?

I know that chameleons don't like being handled much. How often do you guys handle your's. My 9 month old female puffs up and hisses at me every time I open her cage to feed or mist her . Is this normal? I don't try to hold or handle her ever . I just feed her , clean the cage , whatever I need to do and then leave her alone . So my question is should I try to get her more used to me by handling her more? Thanks

I know how you feel dude. I tried to handle my veiled before and he got super puffy and pissed off. :(
After two months (about) he is totally fine with my hand in the cage, believe it or not.

I even put my hand up to him, he didn't care until I left it up there a while.
You can tell if they don't want you in there.

It just takes time, and maybe a bit of luck too. I don't know.

Check out the taming chameleon blog and also just give it time. It might be your chameleons attitude.

Good luck :)

To be honest

I handle both my male and female veileds as often as possible. I know people say it stresses them out and they can die but personally I don't believe it. My chams actually climb out to me when I open their cages now. My male is 2 and my female is almost 2 years as well.

Our female dislikes everyone. Even outside the cage. Our male will come out of the cage to me and hangs out with me but if our 9 year old puts her hand near him, he puffs up and hisses at her lol.

Trust must be earned ;)

It's a really good idea to handle them and gain their trust. You never know when a vets visit is needed. Keep persevering with your hand. Wear a glove! Hand feed. Some will never welcome you but it's worth trying.:)

Does the t-shirt trick work with them like bearded dragons? It is recommended that you put a shirt you have worn in the cage to help them get familiar with your scent (for beardies).
