having lots of problems with new veiled. currently not much of an appetite. help!

You're welcome!

You are doing a great thing for your Picasso...I don't want you to forget that in the midst of of all the "advice".

the whole D3 thing took me many months to figure out....

I'll also offer this up...Veiled are, from what I've read here, among the hardiest of chameleons...with the care you are giving Picasso, I have no doubt he will thrive and give you years of fun and joy. We will, eventually require pictures!

Why is "advice" in quotes?

Honey? I would really not gutload with honey-not to mention I can't imagine how sticky crickets would get, causing cricket poop, etc. to stick to them.

Picasso-It usually takes several weeks/months to get a rescue cham to turn around. You are on the right track!

<3 thanks :)

i dunno why the honey, someone here suggested it... so i did it lol just a drop, i figured it couldnt hurt, honey has lots of good things in it... but i can jus remove it cause u make a valid point.

btw, i searched all over today looking for a calcium supp without d3... no luck. ok well by all over i mean petco and petsmart. those are the only 2 places within 20 minutes of me. the people at the 2 places had very different opinions... one said dust every other day with calc w/d3 and the other one said once a week. then i found rep cal multi vitamin "herptivite" with beta carotine... i was told it was a twice a week thing, but at the other place, i was told it was a monthly thing .... okay guys, set me striaght! lol please??? getting so many different conflicting opinions... it seems dusting is a total guess with reptile people

can the multi vit i bought be used or should i return it? and if i should use it, how often?

so now i have this one http://www.google.com/products/cata...XdCYHKiwSy27TlBg&sa=image&ved=0CAgQ8gIwADgA#p
and this one
http://www.google.com/products/cata...aDM6foiQTbxdjlBg&sa=image&ved=0CAgQ8gIwADgA#p

what else would you reccomend? id really like to use these products if they are okay rather than buying online off some website ive never heard of before.

currently, i am using rep-cal calcium with d3 every other day (since i cant find calcium without d3) and plan to use the multivitamin twice a month... will this work? im trying to figure out a proper supplement schedule, but honestly, im kind of guessing. i really appreciate everyones education tips! :D id be lost without this site lol... seriously

I gave you the proper schedule for an adult veiled.

1. Calcium no d3 every other feeding. Not necessarily every other day as as adult can be fed every other day.

2. calcium without d3 - twice a month

3. multivita - 1 time a month not on same week as d3.

Do you understand if not ask i will clarify. Your cham is an adult it does not need calcium with every feeding. Unlss hes showing signs of cal deficiency. ie mbd

Please stop giving this cham d3 every other day. Order the proper supps from our sponsor LLL. They have everything you need at reasonable prices.

okay, im lookin for some no d3 cal on LLL. thank you :D .... btw, in your post you said to not use D3 twice... did you mean to use cal with out d3 every other feeding and the one with d3 twice a month? i think it was just a typo, but thats wut im assuming

The advice is in quotes in an effort to emphasize it's advice, not criticism... obviously not the best punctuation choice as it seems to have been an issue for you.

SpinyFranky recommended honey in this post.

I suspect if it caused problems, SpinyFranky would have mentioned it. Regardless, one of the benefits of only keeping small quantities of crickets is that if one test is a disaster (sticky crickets! eek!) it can be discontinued for the next batch.

I think the usage of quote in your sentence signifies a criticism when people see it. I see it the way Juli see it also.
If you want to emphasize the word, I would have recommend using bold.

But, anyway, see how easy it is to misunderstand your intention in the web when body language and tone of voice is absent..
Heck, i am guilty of this also recently.

Anyway, i don't know if you want to hear my advice Picasso, instead of honey, you might want to invest on bee pollen instead. it is less sticky.

=sorry ive been posting so much lately, but i need help with this little guy=

first, he has a swolen eye which showed up the day after i got him. he has been to the reptile doc who said he has a vit A defficiency... the vit A shot he gave doesnt seem to be helping his eye much. also putting terramycin on eye 3 times a day. i was somewhat skeptical about him having a vit A defficientcy, but i figured he knows more than i do, so i went along with it since its fairly common for veilds (or so he says)

second, he isnt really eating much. he could be settling in, i know... but its starting to worry me. its been 5 days, and honestly, im really not sure how much he is eating because once in a while my kitty will find a cricket lose on the floor for me... i did figure out how they were getting out and fixed the cage where they were escapeing from today. he is not eating his super worms, which the lady i got him from says he eats them with no problem. he has eaten one wax worm, other than that, he may or may not be eating the crickets (since i dont know because they had been getting out, eek!)

are there any readily available appetite stimulants? perhaps natural ones or something that can be bought from a pet store or the vet?

he is fairly active, and drank water today as i was misting him and his cage, his colors are bright, not grim or anything. i have been trying to keep as little contact with him as possible because i know the move had to be quite stressful on him. the last time he pooed was the day i got him, he pooed in my hand ick! other than that, i have not noticed poo in the cage in 4.5 days (is this abnormal, how often do they poo?)

he is shedding, does their appetite decrease when they shed (sorry if this is a dumb question, but i honestly dont know and am trying to think outside the box)

his temp is currently 85F in his basking area and humidity around 40%

i am offering calcium dusted crickets and super worms and wax worms (only 1 wax worm offered per day tho). im dusting every day because i figure since he isnt eating much, he probably needs all he can get... pls tell me if im wrong in that.

he is 11 months old and 19" in a 5x3x2 foot cage. has a repti sun 5. light on top. he has 2 repti sun 10. bulbs that are old so are only used to light the cage. 150watt ceramic heater and 90watt regular incadecent bulb for heat. my house is cold so he needs this much heat in order to keep his cage warm in the day. i dont think my place drops below 60 at night, so as of yesterday, i decided to turn off the heat at night as reccomended by another forum member. i mist twice a day... umm anything else i forgot i will be mroe than happy to add

what should i do????? i know its only been a few days, and i admit, i may be freaking out a little prematurely, but what if im not! im worried. not eating is a serious thing. any ideas on what i could do or what im doing wrong?

right , kk mate im just gunna advice you as i aint the smartist on this forum and i detho and a vet so this is opinion

for the first 6 days my vinny did'nt eats at all but he was drinking well
and thats important .they are simaliar to us we can survive approx. 30 days without food but only 1 week without hydration so dont worry you will just stress yourself and the chameleon out mate .and thats the last thing you want(forgive my spellings ) i keep mine at 80 during day and down to 75 at night as that is normal in the wild they can survive at night at temps of 60 but thats the min and thats on fin ice litrauly

there are various ways of feedeing
cup feeding method
hand fedding method
or hunting

i find hand feeding a the best way as it shows our chameleon whos in charge and that your nothing to be affraid of (no one in my house is able to feed him by hand except me every1 else gets a bit out there hand lmao im proud of the respect betuan us both)

cup feeding method is putting a loud of crix or waxworm whatever you want in a cup and putting it in front of your cham

hunting method is good to get your cham to feel close to it's normal wild living life but very hard as you dont know if your cham has been eating you would have to count how much food you put in lol.

i recommend hand feeding ;)

hmmmmm, i will actually take this into consideration... my dad owns a few bee hives, i dont know a whole lot about bees, or really anything, its mroe his thing... we all tune him out when he babbles on about how amazing they are... then again, people prolly tune me out about how awesome my chameleon and all my puffer fish are lol.... anyway, off track a bit... ill ask my dad if he can collect bee pollen from them and see wut happens with it... im sure it will be healthier than honey too since it wont have so much bee spit mixed with it lol
