Hello from a new Panther in Charlotte, NC!

Hi all!

Last weekend I went to Repticon and picked up a new buddy from a local breeder. I don't believe the breeder has a website but his animals were clearly happy, healthy, and had great colors, so I picked up a beautiful 6 month old boy. We're still slowly getting to know each other so I haven't picked out a name yet.

I've kept Jacksons in years past and I'm familiar with Panthers, but I've still been doing plenty of extra reading to make sure I'm taking the best care of my new buddy that I can. This site in particular has been super helpful, and I want to thank everyone for sharing all their info and stories over the years!

Since I've only had him a week I'm still mostly leaving him alone, and only occasionally pick him up when I'm moving him between his indoor cage and his outdoor one. My only real challenge so far has been getting him to eat dubia roaches... he was raised on crickets and hunts those like a champ but doesn't really notice the roaches. I've seen him zap a couple but I'm pretty sure the rest are still hiding in the cage somewhere. I have been trying to cup train him but he hasn't taken to that yet, either. Hopefully we'll fix all that soon cause I've got a HUGE colony of dubias going - I'm talking thousands, if not tens of thousands - and I don't want to keep buying crickets as a staple when I've got all these roaches!

I've attempted to attach three photos. The first is his dad / sire, who I met at the show, and then 2 shots of my little guy. I absolutely love the coloration and scaling on his head, which was actually the deciding factor in why I bought the one I did. Sorry for the shoddy quality, I'm an IT nerd not a camera nerd.

Thanks for reading, and I'll see you all around!

Welcome! I'm from Charlotte but live in western NC now. The sire is gorgeous! Good luck with your new guy. There's a lot of valuable information here, just have to sift through the threads.

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone :D It seems like a nice crew in here.

Jannb, thanks for the info! I don't know Dr Wheelock. Would you tell me his screen name, or ask him to reach out to me? I'd love to know some fellow Cham keepers in my home area.

I'm glad he looks good for his age. At what age do Panther's adult colors really show?

Also, would folks please point me to their favorite "diy build threads"? I'm already looking into making him a better home, and want to learn from the pros. I especially want to make sure I get the drainage right, which is something my store-bought enclosure certainly doesn't have any of right now.

It's now a few months down the road and my (slightly less) little panther now goes by Toby, the Danger Skittle! He picked up the Danger Skittle moniker because he's a beautiful, brightly colored, absolutely gorgeous little ahole. He has never hand fed, won't eat or drink if he thinks I'm in sight, and he usually goes black and starts hissing / biting whenever I get inside his cage. He often hisses and snaps at his automatic misting system when that starts up, too! I've got a huge colony of dubia roaches which he basically ignores, deigning only to eat a cricket or 5 every few days making it about impossible to train him with food. Despite all that I'm really fond of the little booger and get him out of the cage once or twice a week for some outdoor basking (which he hates) or a shower (which he also hates).

He was slightly less excitable than usual tonight (at least he was once he got out of the cage) so I decided to do a quick photo shoot to share his colors with you all. Enjoy!

PS - If anyone knows or cares to comment, does he look a bit small for a 9-10 month old male? And are those couple of black patches of missing scale on his lower jaw anything to worry about?

I don't recall if he had a "company" name, but the guy who bred and sold me the Danger Skittle is named Jim Cormas. Why do you ask?
