Hey guys and gals!

I'm Lindsey, I'm a music major college student playing the french horn and I live in the bay area of California :)

I have always been interested in chams, I've grown up with an iguana and leopard geckos, and sulcata torties, but now I have the bug for a cham!

I am looking at all my options for cages, those 48''x24''x24'' look good, I have a nice spot in my room picked out.

I haven't settled on a type I want, I live near the East Bay Vivarium in Berkley so I want to check them out, they have a good reputation so I hear. Do any of you have recommendations? Those nosey be look stunning. I am looking for a type that won't get to 'hyphi' with me as I would prefer not to get bit, but I am not going to handle it too much to stress it. Are males more preferred? How do I tell the difference? They really are all stunning, I just want to get a great one for a first timer. I guess it is kind of silly to say that I don't want to get bitten by my cham...but who does!? I have 6 house rabbits, and I prefer my males to my females, are chams the same way? What are the differences?

This website has been great to learn from, so much info to learn about with lighting, misting, safe plants, feeding, etc etc I am really enjoying it.

Thanks, I look forward to having conversations with you all and hopefully pictures within the next month or so of whatever new love I will add to my household :)

Woo hoo!!! A Bay Area cham fan!! hehe....I don't have any myself just yet but I did many years ago. I was bitten by the chameleon bug several weeks ago when I went to the Reptile Show up in Sacramento and ever since then, I have been looking at getting another chameleon.

hey, first off welcome
well i will start with type, most keeper reccomend a veiled or panther for your first cham, and i see you mentioned the nosy be, they r great i have one myself and he is a total sweetheart and looks amazing.
as far as a cage 24x24x48 is great for an adult cham, but if you get a youngster you will want a smaller cage to get him started in untill he grows a bit like a 16x16x30.
as for determining sex a good breeder ( who i suggest u purchese from there are many sponsors on here, who can ship ) can do that for you, if it is a juvinille or older cham you can tell by the fact that they are the colorfull ones.
im at work so cant post too long but i hope that helps a little and welcome again you wont be dissapointed with a cham they r great.

The most laid back cham I have ever seen myself is a Senegal, like my Karma, he doesn't care who holds him or what happens as long as he gets fed, watered, and has the right setup. They are small though throughout their life and only green when happy as males.

The differences in genders sometimes depends on the cham, Senegals the only difference is colors, size slightly, and that they lay eggs. With Panthers females are generally less colorful, still gorgeous though, I know Jacksons give live birth, what is your idea of a chameleon that you want? Big and colorful, dinosaury and big, tiny and cute, etc?

I must warn you though.. once you go cham you don't go... uh.. *quickly googles words that rhyme with cham* spam? Chams just rock and are addicting.

Thank you everyone! Thanks for the link to your blog, I actually read it within the first 15min of browsing from reading another newbies thread and someone posted it there! It's great!

I would really like to just go ahead and buy the 48''x24''x24'' cage, but if the cham is young can I just cup feed anyways? I would like to do that because I want to control the crickets so they aren't driving me insane at night.

Well I guess this makes sense, someone posted that you can use the smaller cage for outdoor sunning once they outgrow it. That could work.

I'm going to check out the vivarium today! My brother is going with me to scope it all out too. I have a check list ready just in case. I didn't know I had the day off school/work!
