I wouldn't trust information from either source.
It is completely untrue that females need to mate or they die. A female veiled will lay eggs whether she has mated or not. If she doesn't have a place to lay them, or has another underlying condition she can become egg bound and die. A male, in my opinion, is easier to care for, because you don't have the added worry of the possibility of becoming egg bound.
