help! colds? :(

i noticed my male 1 month old veiled is closing is right eye when he basks at the uvb bulb. so i reach into the cage to closely examine him. i notice a bubble formed out of his nose when he exhaled. is he having colds? what should i do? and how is this related to his eyes? we don't have a reptile vet here in our city. the temperature inside the cage ranges from 28-32C. should i put a basking light on top of his cage? he's still eating well. i just noticed this behavior today. he's seem to be fine yesterday
 
My cham keeps the eye closest to the basking light closed too. I think its fine as long as the other eye is alert and he's not sleeping. I'm not sure if its a bad thing or not though, maybe someone else does
 
it is not fine....you need to fill out the "HELP" form but it sounds like you have serious husbandry issues and if your chameleon is only 1 month old this might lead to serious health issues


-28-32C is TOO HOT. It should be 32C under his basking bulb (which you apparently don't have). the rest of the cage should be 24C-27C (32C under the bulb only)

-you should have uvb 5.0 as well as basking bulb (sounds like you have this one)

-your cham should not have his eye closed when basking; this likely means your bulb is too bright (if the temps are not too hot, then you can try adding a little foliage to diffuse the light)

-as for the "bubble" it could very well be a respiratory infection. you need a vet. what city do you live in that you don't have a reptile vet? There is a good thread here on finding herp vets in many places. has he "coughed" or "sneezed" at all?

Lighting - reptisun 5.0 uvb light and a white fluorescent lamp for extra lighting
Temperature - the cage temperature is at 29c-32c
Humidity - i dont check my humidity since philippines is quite humid.
Plants - live plants. three kinds of dracaena:

im quite worried. he's kind of restless unlike before if i turn the light off he usually sleeps afterwards but now he' still awake.
 
Whats the avarage temp outside right now over there?
How are you measuring cage temps?
I think its time to introduce the basking light kingsley.
If he has an infection, it may help him fight it off.
When was he moved to the screen cage?

it's his second day in his new cage. the average temperature outside the cage is 28c in the morning, it gets 30c mid afternoon. at night it's at 26-27c. i dont turn the ac on for him not to get cold. i measure the cage temperature with a digital thermometer i use for snake cages. i observed him just now, he often open and close his mouth to breathe, i think it's because of the colds that's making his breathing harder that's why he open and close his mouth.
 
I would put a basking light on the cage, get one small corner of the cage to 90-95F. He could use it to induce fever, but thats only going to help so much, he needs a vet. Is there any kind of vet you could get him medications?

i'll try asking our vet. she specializes in mammals but maybe she has friends who are familiar with reptiles. :( thanks! i hope he's going to be okay. he's so tiny and so fragile :|
 
Cheer up!
Dont think he is a gonner or anything.
Just use a low wattage bulb for basking, so he has that heat during the day.
People here can recommend medications for RI, and maybe you can get them from your vet:)

Im sorry, I have never had to deal with a RI first hand, and that is what it sounds like.
Can you hear him weezing when he breaths?

EDIT: To answer your original question, "How is it related to his eyes?"

If he has an infection, it will spread all over his body. His whole head is the most vulnerable, as there is alot of water there(eyes, brain), as well as mucus membranes, and orifices(mouth, nose).

i hope he does not have any infection in his eyes. i dont hear any weezing but occasionally he opens his mouth to catch some breath when he's sleeping
 
Can you share pictures of the chameleon? Close ups would be best.
That doesnt sound good. Maybe its too hot for him?

Ideally, he needs to thermoregulate, and be able to choose from a temperature in between 21.5c and 32c. He needs to be able to choose his tempurature at will, by moving within his cage. You may need to use an ac yes.
