Help! Hornworms turning green??

So I have bought hornworms and had them for a while but I didn't know how fast they grow so! I read that if you can see their pulse then it's time to move them to a box with paper pulp/dirt to pupate. I couldnt help but look in after the third day of them being in the box and I found that each end of them are turning light green and they feel more firm. Are they pupating or are they dead/dying?

They'll pupate without anything, mine did at least once big enough.

They're pupating. They get almost lime green before they dig especially around the head.

I have 3 - but thought there was 5 at one point - that are in a bowl of dirt. I water them
I figure if they eventually turn into moths, I won't be able to miss them... they are BIG moths, right?

She was a very happy lizard that day! They go nuts for the hawk moths.

So an update, 2 of them are still lime green but one now is turning black. Could it be dying?

I would guess pupating into its cocoony-thing
