Help now

Oh Codi, that's a terrible thing to witness. Lily did that open mouth and writhing thing just before she passed too, but it wan't all the time, it came more in 'waves' or spasms. So sorry, I know you must feel heartbroken - it's so awful to see them like that. Thinking of you. Tiff x

Thanks to everyone who tried to help. The vet was closed for the holiday.........HAs this happened to anyone else?
How do I preserve his body for the vet to check what happened?? How much does that cost??

If I remember correctly Chris A said to put them in a jar of water and freeze them. The water helps prevent damage from freezer burn. Don't fill the jar all the way or you will have broken glass in your freezer.

I'm very sorry Codi. It honestly sounds as if he choked somehow maybe he inhaled part of a bug. Or perhaps he got a bad bug. If these were new feeders I would believe the bad bug theory before the choking one.

That's so odd that it happened so fast and suddenly like that. I'm so sorry you lost your cam.

If his body was so flat, I'm wondering if maybe something happened internally which caused his lung to collapse? Total guess on my part.

Sorry for your loss! :( I had a male panther pass last fall, in much the same way. He had spent the whole year outside. And had only been inside for less than a week. He looked great. Great color was eating well, good movement, etc.. I was just admiring his color and pow, just like your guy dead. It happen in the morning, and very sudden.
Did you fed, or offer him food before this happen?

I am sorry to hear about Pluto. I know you give the best possible care, so I am sure he was healthy. It is quite possible something happened when he ate this morning.
Again, sorry for your loss.
Lance

Codi:

Sorry for your loss and for what has happened. I suggest taking it to your vet for a necropsy to find out what really happened. My cham vet does these for us for free (you may want to ask your vet to do this for "their research and further advancement of knowledge" - that's why ours has done it for free). In order to preserve the body for the vet, put it in a plastic ziplock baggie and put it in the refrigerator. If you put it in the freezer, you can damage/destroy what caused the problem and the tissue and organs, which would be vital for completing a necropsy.

I'm sorry that had to happen to you. You have to put him in the freezer, not in water, that can cause damage. Freezer burn wouldn't happen over night but if it did it is fine for a necropsy, seeing it's internal so it wouldn't matter. Again, I am sorry.

Molly opens her mouth really wide and wiggles her body from side to side, but thats only when i'm feeding her so I guess it's just to get food moving faster down her esophagus so she can eat more.

In the first picture I do notice a bit of a mucus-like substance towards the back of his mouth. Do you see it?

Sorry for your loss. I know what it's like to lose a little one so quickly and unexpectedly.

So sorry. How heartbreaking. Happening that suddenly to a perfectly healthy captive bred chameleon you have had for sometime- I would suspect that he choked on something or aspirated part of something into his lungs. The sucking in of the stomach could have been his muscles trying to expel a foreign object.

ANother thing that can cause a dramatic and sudden death is when an adult parasite finally penetrates a vital organ.

A necropsy should tell whether either of these scenarios was the cause.

Again, I am so sorry for your loss of your beautiful pet.
