I just got a male chameleon yesterday. He is about 2 months old according to the pet store. I bought the Exo Terra Rainforest Kit. I don't like this and want to build one without a Kit. Is a 50 gallon tank too big? I will want to add a waterfall and other things so I need room. My main question is lighting for heat. Do I need a daytime bulb and a night time (red) bulb to leave on a night? Or do I just use a day bulb and turn it off at night?

Also..I've been reading here and some people say not to use any substrate and use paper towels. I've seen some say use nothing? Is it okay to use nothing in a glass tank? Suggestions? I'd prefer nothing if that's better.

Thanks in advance!

Paper towels make clean up easier in a tank set-up. I keep my hatchling in 10 ten tanks with paper towel bottom ( three to four layers). It keep the humidity up to, as I mist live plants several times a day.

Here's a picture kinda showing the paper towel bottom in a glass tank. And another one showing the babies, minus the live plants.

I just got a male chameleon yesterday. What kind please? This will help us to help you. He is about 2 months old according to the pet store. I bought the Exo Terra Rainforest Kit.You might want to return it. Not sure what is your location. I don't like this and want to build one without a Kit. Is a 50 gallon tank too big? Most use screen enclosures not aquariums. Either will work but the majority will tell you that screen is best I will want to add a waterfall Don't unless you plan to clean it daily. These are bacteria traps and could end up being more trouble then they are worthand other things so I need room. My main question is lighting for heat.Depending on the species you will need light. Most use a household bulb for this. Do I need a daytime bulb and a night time (red) bulb to leave on a night?Dont use the red light at night. Again depending on species the resting/ night time temps will be fine Or do I just use a day bulb and turn it off at night? You are going to need two kinds of lighting for the day. 1. for heat to regulate 2. you will want a uvb 5.0 repti glow.

Also..I've been reading here and some people say not to use any substrate and use paper towels. I've seen some say use nothing?Nothing is probably best. Is it okay to use nothing in a glass tank? Suggestions? I'd prefer nothing if that's better.

Thanks in advance!

Here are some suggestions based off of a veiled or panther. It is very general so please ask questions. This does not cover everything and again depending on species you may need to tweek what is needed.

Suggested Supplements :
Rep-Cal with D3 (This is the twice a month calcium supplement) - http://lllreptile.com/store/catalog/...lcium-with-d3/

Rep-Cal without D3 (This is the daily supplement)-
http://lllreptile.com/store/catalog/...um-without-d3/

Rep-Cal Hertivite (This is a twice monthly vitamin with beta carotene)-

To "Dust" the feeders means to take the food that you are offering your cham. Take a small cup put a very small amount of the above supplements and the feeders and shake them around the powder will adhere to the food and therefore be Dusted.

Secondly try to use various types of feeders. Crickets, Reptiworms, Silk Worms, Superworms...

Here is an example of some cage options instead of your current option:

Here is some light needs links (Remember to go 12hrs on and 12 hours off):
This one is the most important (Zoo med 18" Repti Sun 5.0 UVB Bulb) - This will help to provide an artificial light source.

Here is the hood that will light the bulb above -

Then you will need to use a house light bulb 40 W (at first) with a light hood to maintain temps around 80 degrees.

Here is a package that includes a veiled cham but you can ask them to not include and the setup is something like $99

Hopefully this will help you.
