Help with locale, age, and sex please :)

Hi there! :)

Hope all is well! I'm a new cham-mom to a charming panther chameleon but don't have many details regarding his age and locale so hoping I could leverage all of your expertise. I've had him since Sunday so four days with this cute little dude (I think he's a dude, but I'll love the cham regardless).

Here's what else I've gathered:
- He can shed completely in one day
- He has pooped once every two days so far

See photos attached, and thanks in advance for your help!

Absolutely a male. Age? Hard to say with so many possible variables. All being perfect, I would GUESS between 6 and 12 months old based on appearances, but I don't know his actual size, weight, food and supplement regiment that he was on before you, genetic potential (size of parents) and any of the other factors that could come into play.

He does look healthy though, so congrats!

Same issue with Locale. It would be safe, but hardly sure, to say Ambilobe since they are very common and are known to show those colors, but he could be a mixed locale, he could be one of several other areas.
Really hard to know if you don't have the info from the breeder and the parent animals. I will stick with a GUESS here of Ambilobe.

Is there a reason the person you got him from didn't give you this info, or are you just trying to double check what they told you? Maybe a pet shop, as they are notorious for not knowing much about the animals they provide.

Definitely a male. I would guess Blue Bar Ambilobe but no way to know for sure. Need to know his size at least to make a guess at age.

Thanks so much, Redman! I just measured him using the Measure app on my phone-- his body is about 5.5 inches and with a tail about another 5 inches totaling to ~10.5 inches. Didn't get a chance to weigh him yet so I'll try again tomorrow when I try to lure him out of his cage.

Yes, bought him from a pet store and unfortunately, they don't really know how old he is. :\

Thanks for confirming he's a male, Skoram! I couldn't really tell at first because of his light pinkish color, but a lot more colors have been showing up today. :)

He's about 10.5 inches total with the body being about 5.5 inches. I'll need to weigh him tomorrow.

Well, regardless of his locale and specific age, he is absolutely beautiful. So welcome to the forum and I hope you take advantage of some of the great info available here on feeding, supplements, lighting, and all things cham-care that people have available here.

Your boy should continue, with good care and husbandry of course, to grow and develop colors up to around 18 months of age. A young, healthy male panther is a joy to watch as they change, sometimes day by day. I hope it's as amazing a journey for you as it is for so many of us.

I would guess around 6-7 months old then. Granted this is based on my very limited experience with only raising 2 male panthers from a young age. They were both about that size after 6-7 months.

Yes, he is already striking with so much red and will only grow more striking as he becomes an adult. Congratulations on a beautiful boy!

Aww thank you, thank you for the warm welcome to the forum! Really appreciate it. It has been so fun watching this little guy and can't wait to learn more about him. :)

Beautiful dude!! He is the size of my 3 month old, although each cham varies... can you post a picture of his whole viv please? He looks healthy

Hi there! Phew-- glad he's healthy. :)

Here's his current setup -- I have his 24x24x48 cage, the linear uvb light, and more vines coming this weekend per all of the recommendations from my husbandry check request in this thread: https://www.chameleonforums.com/threads/new-cham-mom-husbandry-check-please.173855/#post-1551057

He's located near the fireplace, but the fireplace doesn't work at all.

I'm not seeing the linear uv fixture. Unless that's it running up the back? If so, you may want to change that. UV can damage your eyes without you realizing it.

Or is it just the angle, and it's hiding behind the spot domes? Sorry for any confusion on my part.

Hi there :)

Linear uvb light, larger cage, and more vines coming this weekend! After your help and a few others with figuring out his approximate age, I’m due for a bigger and better setup.

I’ll make sure when I set up the linear light that it will be placed on the cage. Thanks for the reminder!

Sorry, I totally spaced it on your post. Thought that WAS the new setup with everything in the pic. My apologies!

Always glad to see someone who cares enough to do the proper due diligence in ensuring the best care and setup for their Cham.

Rock on, ChamMom! (Couldn't resist the rhyme!)
