My male veiled chameleon is 5 months old. . He is seemingly very weak. He does eat but only when I hold him. He won't go down to his feeding dish.. he always has water going and we have a humidifier. His feces looks normal and he doesn't have sunken on eyes.. I can't figure out what it could be! I don't have an exotic vet near me so if you have any advice I'd greatly appreciate it!

have you changed your UV light recently? Though the light may work, after a while they don't produce UV. I had a veiled chameleon before the one I have now that died only after a few months of having it because my UV light wasn't producing any.

Without UV they can get weak and die.

Do you dust your crickets with vitamin D3? If so they can overdose on that supplement.

It's hard to tell. I am sorry :( I've checked this forum out for a while for caring for my current (veiled)chameleon and there are experts here who can probably give u more help..

Are you sure that's a 5 month old male, not a female? Casque looks a little wavy and the back left foot looks swollen. Go to the health section and fill out the " how to ask for help" form so we can get more information to help you. Jannb would be a good resource for you.

older strip lights don't produce UV. I think UV lasts about 6 months and after that it's time to replace them! Good luck and I hope your chameleon gets better.

Thank you,
About Klooney..
  • He's a veiled Cham
  • 5 months
  • Got him at 3 months
  • Handled roughly every 4 days
  • We feed him, mealworms, crickets, fruit flies twice daily.
  • For water we use a dripper, humidifier
  • I haven't seen him drink as much but still does.
  • Feces isn't tested (no exotic vet here) but is dark and has a hard consistency.
Our cage..
  • All screen
  • Lights are on a timer shut off at 7:30p turn back on at 7:00 am
  • Using Exo Terra
  • There bottom temp is usually 68 and the basking is 80 we do have a thermometer.
  • We use a humidifier and the levels are always kept between 60-70
  • We do use live plants.. pothos and also an umbrella. (He has been eating the umbrella plant)
My little Klooney seems to be extremely weak.. I thought maybe it was dehydration.. but I want to be sure I am treating him as he needs!
Thank you so much for all your help!

Do you feed/gutload the insects well?
What supplements do you use and how often for each? Please be specific.
Ease
Also could you post a photo with the left arm showing specfic?

That leg does look a little funny. If he does have MBD it's just the onset of it. Make sure you are giving him his supplements. Calcium with d3 twice a month, multivitamin twice a month not to be given at the same time, and calcium without d3 at every other feeding. Replace the UVB bulb like you said. I don't think he looks dehydrated, but the best way to know for sure is to look at his urate (the white part of his poop) if that is brown or rusty looking then he has a hydration issue. It's best to gut load your feeders with turnip greens, dandelion greens, mustard greens, butternut squash, bee pollen, and various fruits. Then by a quality dry mix like cricket crack. Flukers is basically useless in my opinion. I would bring his basking temp up about 10 more degrease that could be one reason he doesn't seam active. might give him a better variety in his diet as well. Things like super worms, silk worms, Dubai roaches, horn worms. Things like wax worms, and mill worms should only be given as a treat do to poor nutritional issues.
