NEW: I just uploaded a new picture of my guys tank for the time being. I am taking him to the vet in the morning and i dont know how else to keep his hemi-penis moist... Do any of you think that it is alright with the bowl of warm shallow water in there with him in it for the night? He seems to be alot calmer in warm water and doesnt try to mess with his thing.. Let me know! I dont want to harm him if he cant stay in there all night.

Okay... so I have a veiled chameleon named Oscar.. He is a little over a year old and he has seemed to be really healthy up until the other day.. I took him out of his cage and i put him on my bed and noticed that he was going to the bathroom so i put him back in his cage... I then looked at him a few minutes later and noticed that whatever was hanging from his butt was not going away.. I looked a little closer and it was all really red and pretty gross. I looked up what it could be and couldn't find anything that matched what was wrong with him.. I put him in a shallow dish of warm water and he seemed calmer in it.. I put him back in the cage and noticed today that it was all bloody, I then found a forum that said it could be sperm plugs so i took tweezers and gently tugged on it and my chameleon went crazy

I have no idea what is wrong and I want to help him ASAP!! If it comes down to it I will take him to the vet but, im hoping someone knows what is wrong and can help me out!

yes, it looks like prolapse. No wonder why you chameleon went crazy. I would never suggest to use tweezers to pull something out unless you know what it is. You will have to get him to a vet. do what jann B said and get some ky jelly and put it on there. Do not let it dry out.

That looks like a hemi-penis prolapse. Sometimes when they are "in the season" it can come out after a going poo and some sperm will fall out as well but usually goes right back in within a few seconds. If it is still out and seems to be stuck, try and push it back in with a rubber glove on. You can just push it back up and his body will begin to put it back inside himself. It being out like that for an extended amount of time can become infected very easily. You should probably see a vet. : /

Uually a rectum prolapse is a little more tissue than the pictures you showed, i believe its a hemi-penis prolape but regardless, it needs to be inside his body ASAP and he should probably be checked for infection if it was out for a while. And keep it moist!!!!!!!!!!!!! Im sure others with far more knowledge than myself will discover this thread shortly.

Hemipenis prolapse. Take him to a vet asap (the condition often corrects itself--the hemipenis retracts on its own) but sometimes a vet is required to correct the problem.

Realistically, KY jelly would keep it moist throughout the night if he falls asleep and is still. It wouldn't be too good for him to be up all night and if he in water all night, he could fall asleep and drown. I doubt that is too probable but you never know. Did you ever try and manually push it back in?

Yeah try ky that should keep it moist...keep us update on the little guy

is that his daily cage?

Holy crap!!, I didn't even realize that third picture of his home and just payed attention to the ones at hand about the prolapse. I sure hope that is not his cage, though my senses are telling me that it absolutely is.

Is that a water bowl??????????
The cage shouldn't be an all glass enclosure.
The cage is far far too small for him
you need a live plant and far far more climbing options for your lil guy
and your basking lamp shouldn't be right on top of the screen as if he climbs that back left plant and hangs upside down on the ceiling under the light he can get severely burt!

Good luck at the vet. Read up on chameleon care while he's at the vet's so you can get the set up correct to prevent any future issues.

This will be harsh but you will find that it doesn't change the facts. Did you wt your avice from a pet store? I will tell you a long while ago I has the same setup and my chameleon died because of it. You need screen, higher climbing, a linear not compact 5.0 UVB bulb. The water bowl needs to go as he needs running water to recognize it. Notice how you never see him drinking from it?
