i got my chameleon Jackson yesterday and I was wondering how long should I wait to take him out and hold him

Give him about a week to get settled before you try to interact with him. Then, be sure to let him act on his terms - never grab him roughly and have the patience to let him crawl onto you. It might take some time, but it's well worth it to have a cham that trusts you! :)

thank you for that it will help. when ever I try to pet him he hisses but at night he lets me pet him and he is almost done shedding

Hahaha, chameleons will never really like to be petted :) Some will tolerate a gentle rub under the chin but not all. Letting him climb on you is the most healthy way the two of you can interact. Just keep in mind that some chameleons will never be friendly. They are really more of a look but don't touch animal.
