Holy Hornworms!

i keep the horns in the same room with the chams, so they grow faster, no basement, as i live in an apt.
yea i have a cham problem.

i love my little ferret. his name is otter.. and hes such a stupid weasel.. haha.. but so cute.

and its just a freshwater tank... i tried saltwater, but could never get my levels to stay right... so i gave up.

i had a huge ick problem about a year ago... and the ick treatment changed my water blue.
and i had to remove my turtle.

oh yea, i have a 3-4 year old red eared slider...
hes so mean. haha.
his name is turtle.

i keep various gourami, shibunkin, fantail goldies, and a bala shark.
but i need to add some more fish soon.

my largest fish is about 9 inches long.. hes a shibunkin, think coi fish but not quite.

Oh hell no. (reaction to them in your hand) Those things are scary, I grab them with tongs and when they bite the metal you can hear it. I got bit once.

it doesnt hurt. theyve tried to nom me a few times.
but they are the only bugs that my male veild will hand feed with,

VERY cool, yeah that malachite green/blue ich treatment will change your water for sure..you should just do some partial water changes until its back to normal. also add some fresh carbon to your filter or in a mesh bag after rinsing and that will help! i am familiar with all your fish! i have been a fish head since a kid, used to even breed and sell them back to the stores..

love the names, very fitting especially turtle! :D

yea, but it treated the ick.
i did water changes and added carbon.. but it got bad.. lost 5 fish in 3 days from it.
when its a small outbreak, one or two fish, i dont treat.. but i had 25 fish in the tank, and 10 had an outbreak of it.

i have a pink kissing gourami that ive had for 3 years, and hes survived 2 bouts with ick. kinda sad that i cant get him a mate.. cant find any.

i bred mollies for a while.. then i had a black belt cichild, but it was soo aggressive i couldnt even keep a pleco in with him. so i traded him for angels.

and thanks! Turtle is a mean turtle, had him since a baby, barely bigger than quarter.

dog=Ammo, english setter
cat= Timber
chams= kink, lily, kermit.

Feel free to pick my brain if you step back up to saltwater ;) up to 200+ gallons now and 10+ years of addiction!
Also just curious what questions do you have about silkies and I'll answer them on a basis of what I did I have 15 breeding pairs of moths right now and 8 laying eggs so I think I'm having a little success so I'd be happy to trade experiences for experiences ;)

one day i might. right now im totally out of room for a saltwater tank... haha

too many chams bugs, and not enough apt..
hoping to try again when i buy a house, which i hope happens at the ned of this year.

well besides feeding them and cleaning out th epoo. how do i make them moths?>
how do i get them to breed?
how do i care for moths>?
for horns and silkies for that matter.
sounds like the easy part right now is getting hem big enough to spin or dig to pupate. but what do i do with them after!
and any experience i can offer,, let me know... though not on worms!

animal care.. im pretty good at. haha

NICE tank! guess we are all a lot alike!

For breeding the silky moths that's easy they emerge eager little buggers as soon as a male and female emerge it's on
I found they'll spin when they want just have it ready for them like I said just line the sides of whatever you're raising them in with egg crate vertically and they'll roam over and spin when they feel the need
As for what I know on hornworms that's work haha
Gotta have them emerge in a cage with a humming bird feeder with sugar water in it and a tomato plant near the cage for them to smell to entice breeding and they also from what I hear will lay eggs everywhere that's what's turned me off from them so far but it's going to be a go as soon as I can afford a few in the future

Once the silkworms spin, do i have to move them? do i leave htem alone?

and good to know on the hornworms.

ill try to find a tomato plant today... whats funny is i cant even eat tomatos! haha so any it grows im throwing out..

oooo.. once the horns dig and pupate. do i remove them from the dirt, or leave them?
if i do remove them.. do i just place them in the cage and wait till htey emerge?

And we have lift off!

I placed my 6 fattest hornworms in some dirt today.. and one has already dug itself down... i think.

i found a little hole in the dirt.. but i cant find the damn worm!

so it either got out of the tub.. or buried in the dirt

now i just need to fnd a tomato plant soon.

you have 3 -4 weeks to wait for them to emerge. If it were me, I would go get a tomato plant once you see the first moth come out. You also need a cheap hummingbird feeder with the red nectar stuff or a sugar solution so they can feed.

Never tried to breed any of the worms. Yuck! I will occasionally buy some horn worms at a trade show here and there. I only get enough to give a treat to some of my bigger males. I use tongs too. Not a chance am I going to touch one of those little monsters! Look like they belong on an old Godzilla movie poster...Attack of the Killer Worms! Ahhhh...
