I never saw this happen before, could just be a freak thing but I often wash some larger prey items before feeding by running the under the faucet in a small container to wash off any mites, feces, debris, etc. and so supplements stick better. I waterboarded (not funny really, but I can't help the analogy) a big hornworm today and he was obviously not happy about it. When I used the forceps to pick him up he quickly snapped around and bit it (or at least hit it) and spit out a yellowish HOT liquid- squirted far enough out of the enclosure to hit my bare foot so I felt it. We're only talking a mL or so, when I wiped it off it had no smell or anything.
Do these guys have any defensive mechanism like this?
My chameleon saw the whole thing happen and actually shook his head back and forth and hightailed it to the top. Hilarious, probably coincidental, but I'm thinking maybe he smelled something.
He usually will come trucking from wherever he is to grab one but not this one!
