Hornworm bribery

Hornworms are a not so often treat around here (they grow huge so fast and I’m always afraid they’ll bite back), so they make great bribery tools to get some pics and a little video.

My usually fierce sweetheart, Stella. She’s so gentle when she grabs the yummy. I just have to make sure to keep my fingers hidden or they are fair game to her.

Usually Lucky is super shy and hides away, even when I try to offer yummy treats in a cup. Once he saw I had a hornworm though, he was coming out to get it! Very rare behavior for him!

My others were much too quick to be able to try to get video. My cutie patootie, Kali was very eager and grabbed her worm before I knew it. She was so quick I almost didn’t get even a pic. I guess she gets in a lot of practice while hunting her isopods.

Mango was already climbing out of his enclosure before I could even get the worm ready to give him. But then, a few hours later he was climbing out onto the watering can when I was caring for his plants. Then other times he becomes one with his branches to avoid me even looking at him at a distance. 🤷‍♀️

Bart wasn’t so sure about running over (he was busy doing his routine patrol), but once he saw what I had, he ran halfway over and just quickly shot his tongue the remaining distance. He too is either climbing out to me or staring at me suspiciously as he keeps his distance.

The beardies benefitted the most since the majority of the worms were much too large for the chams. Many were too large even for them, so I’ll once again be trying to breed my own.
Stella was just a blur…she never hesitates when it comes to her bugs. Her salads…meh.

Spike has just been a crazy beardie all around…head bobbing non stop, running all around with his beard pure black and eating his salads almost violently! When he sees a green gummy worm…O!M!G! He goes insane and will hurl his body to it! (Same response when he happens to catch sight of Electra) Unable to get it on video or pic, but with great effort and a little trickery, was able to get a calmer looking pic.

The way Stella's throat pouch retracts as she sets sight on that hornworm; she is such a character!
I love how individualized all of their interactions with the treat are. Reptiles are so special.

(Also @nightanole I love seeing Tarantula pics/videos and your fluffy spider looks so proud of their catch. Did they do the little happy dance they're known to do?)

FABulous! I love Stella. Look how dainty she takes her worm. I hsve never tried hornworms. Are they only used for treats?
Yes, hornworms are treats only. They don’t have a whole lot of nutrition to them, but are great for hydration and obviously must be super delicious. Besides that they grow massive so quickly, I don’t care for the fact that they can bite back. Some will crush their mandible before feeding, but I lack the heart for that. Usually chameleons know enough to be careful and will shoot for the head. Also, be aware that they have super sticky/grippy feet and on some surfaces, their grip is stronger than the cham’s tongue. I just hand feed them to avoid that problem. When you try them, make sure to avoid being in the squirt zone. 😂

Oh yes, she loves to spin around in circles after a big catch. In the case of the hornworm, she petted it for a solid 5-10min before deciding it was food. Like that is a 2 bucks worm, just eat it, its the last one.

They sound a little bit like zophobas morio.. I used to raise those for a friend of mine who had a chameleon a few years ago, before I ever believed I would have one myself. They will also bite, so I never picked up the big ones with my hands.. AND they would squirt! I'm going to give a go at raising them again as soon as it gets a little warmer here in Ohio. They are hard to get going in the dry cold winter.

I feel like every hornworm order should come with a free welders mask, there is no safety zone with hornW squirts…😂

Ok, that does sound really really cute…but I am still afraid of big hairy spiders…and the ones with big butts.

I’m just restarting to breed superworms. My beetles emerged a couple of weeks ago and have been (ahem) ‘busy’. ;) Last time I bred them I had wayyy too many beetles, so was almost drowning in superworms.

Everyone is looking great! ❤️ Stella has always been such a pretty girl. I can’t believe Kali will be 4 soon. Time sure flies.
