How Huge is Kitty?

That wasn't referring to you Brad, it was general.
Too far away, too close, no difference in the result was there. Your hand is NOT a reliable thermometer Brad, your a warm blooded mammal.
The reason I posted was that when the long time owner/breeder of chams, and creator of the website your a member of, burns the very animal his own 'Gospel' status blog is about the care of, the irony is too glaring not to learn a valuable lesson from!
:)

I understand your point and would now like you to find an experienced chameleon keeper who has not made some mistakes, particularly this mistake.
This was not the only mistake I have made, and I think I have admitted to most of them on the forums.
By the way, I am not the creator of these forums.;)

Brad, my point was there isnt one! (bar yours truely.(burns)..so far..and I take making sure I dont become one, very seriously)
For some reason I was under the impression the forum was yours???
*shrugs*

Being warm blooded doesn't have much to do with it.
Temperatures are what they are and it is either hot enough to burn skin or scales, or it isn't.
I don't want this to seem like an argument with JoJackson, it's not, I am posting this so that others can learn from this mistake.
The analogy I am going to use is cooking a roast.
There are a couple of ways to go about it:

1. cook at a higher temperature for a shorter period of time.

2. cook at a very low temperature all day.

Both methods work and the roast gets cooked.

What happened in the case of Kitty's burned casque is that he sat high on the screen with his casque pressed against the top of the enclosure (which was not hot enough to burn) all day and slowly cooked it.

Any thermometer (including my hand) would not register a high temperature in the basking spot, and there is a digital probe there (by the way).
I would use my hand to actually press against the screen and test the temp.
It never occurred to me that he would sit there all day and slowly burn his casque.
Lesson learned.

It amazes me that they can just sit there and cook themselves! You would think that they would have an ounce of common sense and think: 'I'm too hot now, I'll move', but they don't! Lily would sit in the sun and bask until she gaped, even though she had shade, and I would have to physically move her out of the sun. Sometimes they can really be a stupid as they look, lol!:D

I was under the impression that a basking/hot spot should be available all the time during daylight hours. . .
Should the on-time be limited?

No your assumption is right. It should be there at all times unless the ambient temp is high enough to not require one. It just takes the owner/keeper to keep an constant vigil to make sure these things don't happen. When I see my guy on his screen I turn the lamp off and he usually comes back down. But even then it's very possible for him to get up there for hours sometimes, before I come in and catch him. It's impossible to keep an eye on them 24/7. So like Brad and Joe were trying to say, this can really happen to anyone.

Brad like always, I'm very impressed with kitty. He is a monster. And just LOL at the reference to his name. I loved that show.

I too have found my male hanging under his lamp, I mainly notice this happen in the morning when he is warming up before he does his daily laps around the cage to make sure nothing has changed.

I always wondered how Kitty got his name! haha.
