I was wondering if I could keep a nother chameleon wiht my jacksons. Leelo is about 6 months old. I wqas thinking about getting a female Jacksons. Yes i plan on mating them. This weekend Leelo exibited head bobbing, so i think hes ready to be a father.

As many as will fit in there... they only just need enough room to turn around. Make sure there is only one basking spot to ensure adequate competition and also make sure to cup feed them. This is a glass fishtank right? Good.

Joe,
I am sure we could keep this going but someone will get upset that we are not being helpful.
Yours made me laugh!

I suppose you're right, Chuck...

Seriously kid, the basic rule is one chameleon - one enclosure. Most people won't even let their chameleons see each other let alone live together...

I would only put them together for a few minutes at a time for breeding purposes.

you should have done some research before asking this question. The fact that you already own a cham and notice " head bobbing " and what that means, its hard to guess why you dont know one of the top three things about keeping this type of reptile, which is HOUSE ALONE. ( with few exceptions, mostly they involved cages big enough to put a suv in. :)

Even simple questions can't be answered on these boards anymore without someone being sarcastic. Give the kid a break.

Here here....Easy everyone thats what the forums are for...to help educate.

Chams are solitary creatures so putting more than one in a cage is not a good idea. Most keepers will tell you that this will put too much stress on your animals.

Also if you intend to mate, everyone here will tell you to wait until they are over a year old..

Hope that helps..

Thanks OPI , I was a little disappointed in the responses he was receiving. He only has 20 posts on the site. We can't make it uncomfortable for someone to ask questions (even questions we feel they are things that should be known or very basic. We were all just starting out at some point.

I enjoyed the humor it just would have been nice if his question was addressed as well. Maybe with a jk. You can't see a smile in a post and someone may not know your kidding. I know a real answer was given after the fact. Just wanted to point this out to whom ever the newbies are that may be reading this post.

Just my $.02

That was obviously not the question Chuck, but I'm sure the original poster will appreciate all of your useful information.

Someone that has a chameleon and is asking how many to put in a cage has done zero research. These animals are not for everyone and should in my opinion be in the hands of people that have done their homework on the species husbandry, habits, etc. They are not for kids and as a breeder at shows,I refuse to sell to kids and they have cash in hand. Stick with a snake or an ant farm. Sorry if this is too much for you but I don't encourage or enable idiots to purchase chameleons. My concern is always for the chameleon.

And for the sake of arguement, once again, I'll take up the contrary position. I've been doing that a lot lately...

Maybe the original poster HAS done some research and HAS read some of my posts that certain species of chameleons can be kept together. Any sub-species of jacksonii are not one of the "communal" type chameleons, but goetzei, rudis, bitaeniatus and ellioti can certainly be housed together in pairs or groups. Melleri I beleive are another, but I have not worked with that species to be entirely sure of that fact. I DO NOT advocate keeping like species together if the owner doesn't have extensive experience with chameleons already, (experience to know the subtle differences between happy and stressed) but it can be done.

Let the flames of me begin again...

I am glad and applaude that you advocate such high levels of responsibility for any of your potential owners of your pets. But there are alot of people and stores who are not as responsible.

That being said, with those who have bought a cham and really didn't know what they were getting into, all we as the forum can do is to help those people along...if not for that person's sanity, to keep another cham healthy and happy.

Just my opinion.

Chuck , I respect you passion for Chameleons and the fact that you keep Chams out of the hands of kids and others that probably shouldn't keep Chams. In this case the poster has some Chameleons and obviously could benefit from guidance. He made a great first step and started with this site rather than asking someone at Petsmart.

As a breeder (In my opinion) I think it may be a little more productive to teach and encourage inexperienced keepers rather than belittle them and call them idiots.

Unfortunately there are a lot of sources of misinformation around. A pet store alot of the time being a big violator. It is a goal of this forum to educate and help people become responsible owners. If I were a new member I would probably never return to this site if I received a similar response from this thread. It could do more damage than help in that case.

This is not a personal attack. I am just trying to provide a point of view from a new curious user to the forum.

You have some beautiful Chams ! Great site too. I love the configuation of it.
