How to convince parents?

First of all, can I ask how old you are? Do you know about all the different bugs you have to keep and then buy food for them to eat to live? Chameleons kinda require a lot of care and are not for everyone. Now I am not saying you could never keep one, I am just wondering if you realize all the expense they are to get set up and even afterwards feeding them.

I REALLY REALLY WANT a chameleon but my parents said no, is there any way to get them to say yes?

Do they have any idea what it takes to provide care for a cham?
If not, give them a good caresheet from this forum to explain what's involved.

Who's going to pay for all the setup supplies? The live insect feeders? The vet visits if it gets sick? Give them some cost estimates so they really understand and you can come to some sort of agreement about the costs.

Do you have other pets that might be a danger to your cham or vice versa? Are they worried about getting salmonella from a reptile? Again, get the facts so you can counter their objections.

I ask because they should be able to explain just WHY they are saying no. The reason could be any or all of the below:

-money (yours or theirs)
-space in the house or your room
-your time to take care of everything every day
-they don't want live bugs in the house (and you don't have a choice...chams need live insects and lots of them)
-they have fears about reptiles, being bitten, or other kids getting bitten.

Ummm I've seen a 4x2x2 rebtibreeze screen cage for $80 on amazon.

Since you are 22, they may be trying to "encourage" you to get your own place. If they let you have one at their house, they know you may never leave;)

Get your own place, figure out all your bills and get things all settled that way first and then see how much money you have left over after that. Chameleons are not cheap to keep and raise.

Im 22 and almost about to move out so my parents excuse for not allowing it is "just wait til you move out"

bleh

As a parent who has children your age, I would agree with them.

If you are 'about to move out', why wouldn't you want to wait till you get out on your own?

As Carol and others mentioned, Chams are amazing animals but require a ton of time, effort, and many times, money to take care of them correctly. Why put your parents in a situation to have to deal with that.

I'll let you in on a secret, they love you, but want you to leave.....

I would suggest you spend your time and money right now researching and buying the set up and gear you need. Once you move, BAM, you are ready to go that day if you want.

You think parents are bad, wait till you have to convince your wife that you just need "one more" pet......

Typo? 12? not 22?
shugo was the op, not me :D Sorry I seem to have hijacked your thread shugo!

Im 22 and money isn't an issue, I have more jobs than I can handle almost, I only want one now before I move out because I still have 1 year of college left (art school)

again, I am not the person who asked for help to convince parents, I know I'm looking at $1000 entrance fee into the hobby if I'm gonna do it right :)

Chameleons arent the cheapest reptiles and they are difficult for beginners. a Chameleon is my first reptile and he is happy and healthy.

If your parents say wait, just wait. Do a bit more research compile a grocery list of what you need and prices and shop around in the mean time. I bought everything at a reptile show and usually its the cheapest prices.

Also Van Gough forgot about the domes for the lights, two light domes will run you 30 bucks.

Don't be discouraged by this forum. There are members here that are seasoned vets and have seen the worst treatment of Chameleons you can imagine and its understandable they get overzealous sometimes.

:) This is the best site for advice and is a wealth of Knowledge

Hope you enjoy your little guy when you get him/her
