humidifier for drinking?

i am currently breaking down a reptile habitat as id like to switch gears to a panther (previously housed red eyed crocodile skinks) and to keep up their humidity i ran an ultrasonic humidifier that took about 15 seconds to fill the 55 gallon aquarium. when i first bough it i remember during the testing periods after about a minute or so water droplets would form all over my kitchen counter where the fog hit. that being said, if i was to run the humidifier output straight into the foliage, do you think that would an appropriate source of drinking water? say maybe 6-7 times a day at 2-4 minute runtimes?

Hello,

The humidifiers aren't really going to provide you with enough water for a chameleon. There are some chameleons that require more or less water than others, but in general humidifiers are used more for supplemental humidity control.

Here is an idea of how much water you might want for your animal when considering drinking volume.

That is the AquaZamp RainDome in action.

not sure if its just my comp but that page loads photobucket than goes to a blank white page. im going to try running it today for 4 minutes and see how much water is collected and drains into a cup to get an exact idea. on another note what is the output on that mist maker and how long would one usually run it? how many times a day?

so would it be beneficial to run it in turn with a misting system or just cut out the humidifier all together?

the answer to the question is more complex than yes or no.

opinions will vary but my jackson xanth gets all the drinking water he needs from an ultrasonic i have set up as you suggest. direct mist to foliage creating drops and he will sit there at times during the day and basically get his fill.

so, i think it depends on your cham, set up of the mister and will your cham accept it as a source(my veiled hates misters and hides in the corner when one is used).

ymmv, but it can work

well whats your opinion on panthers drinking? ive kept veiled's before and i just ran off hand misting but haven't kept panthers before. obviously i won't know until i try but at the same time i really hate going into something like this blind without a plan.

so looking at the aqua zamp, im curious if i could do a simple diy system with one of their nozzles and another pump. my question know is do i HAVE to use their pump to drive it? im seeing it works off pressure, so i have an old lifegard 4000 submersible/inline pump, if i was to taper down the tube to fit the tube size would that still put out an appropriate mist? im not sure of the pressure of the pump, but it seems that any pump that can out out 900+ gph would create enough back pressure to create a mist or am i missing something?

Hello,

Sorry to say, that type of pump will not work. RainDome and Misting systems rely on a high pressure water source. The pump you asked about is a high volume, low pressure pump (if any pressure, maybe a couple of PSI). The AquaZamp system out of the box makes 80-90PSI and can be turned up to 120PSI. The AquaZamp pump can run continuously 24/7 and can even run dry without water without being damaged. It is nearly silent when in operation.

You can purchase a misting nozzle or RainDome from AquaZamp and use other methods to power it with water, but the nozzles will require at least 35-40PSI in order to function. The nozzles have a built in check valve to stop water from syphoning back down the tube when not in use, and it takes that high water pressure to overcome the valve. AquaZamp does have nozzles without the check valve, but it wouldn't be a misting spray, it would be more of a spit I'd imagine. I wouldn't suggest it.

If you take a look at the AquaZamp Express systems they are nearly 100% complete. They are just lacking the water reservoir and water. I am still honoring the prices found at the https://www.chameleonforums.com/aquazamp-spring-sale-106560/. If you are looking to make just one purchase for your watering needs and want to get it right the first time. I would buy the Premium LowProfile RainDome system. This is a larger RainDome area than the Premium RainDome system, it looks very clean on top of the cage, it fits on top of the cage with a heat light and UVB lamps with room to spare and it has everything you need, minus the water. If you are more on a budget, go for the Express RainDome system, it is a smaller rain area, but it has almost everything you need in order to get going.
