Humidifier

Hey all,

So, im in the process of upgrading my cham's enclosure (9 month panther). I've purchased 2 pothos, a schefflera and a TON of grape wood branches i get to figure out how to secure lol :). I also purchased a cool mist humidifier, and here's where my question comes in. Is it enough to have it located next to the enclosure with the spout facing the screen wall. Trying to be sure that the humidity is getting where it needs to go. I'm in Chicago and with winter coming and central air, humidity can sometimes be a problem. Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated. I'll post pics of the upgrade once i'm done later today. Thanks again in advance.

what is enough?

So is it enough to point it in the cage for humidity? I personally would think not, however every situation is different and I do not know your specific set up. I will give you a quick run down of how I did my set up (because it is very easy) and maybe you can adjust your situation?

So it sounds like you have not modified your humidifier? if you look on the web you will see some instructional videos that can show you how to do this. I followed one video and drilled out the top, plumbed in the pipe to the top of the habitat and made one change I think is the biggest key.

Every "fogger" whether it is homemade or purchased has shown the same constant, this is one inlet port into the habitat. I don't believe that was benefitting my Chameleon who lives in a screen cage (in one side, out the other). So instead of plumbing to the top of the cage and just porting out of the pipe down into the habitat, I made a loop with the pvc across the top of the cage. So if you were looking down at the top of my cage, you would see a loop of pvc all connected together with no outlet port but a TEE going down the backside to the humidifier. I then drilled small holes all around this loop at various slight angles. when the humidifier turns on, it is a complete fog evenly distributed over the habitat creating a wet rainforest look. in a matter of apx 5 minutes, there is droplets of water around the habitat and my chameleon will drink these from the leaves. I have this on a timer that runs for 45 mins every hour and a half starting at noon to about 8:30pm and I only have to fill up the humidifier about once a week.

I too think it should be plumbed into the enclosure, but unlike my friend here I like it to only go down one side. That way if the humidity gets too much they can move to the opposite side to dryer air. Even though I must admit my Jackson loves it I do see her leave it to bask. I have the basking, and dryer air on one side. Cooler moist air on the other it kind of works on the same principle as a heat gradient. They need to be able to change their surroundings to suit themselves so they can regulate. this is what works for me, but ultimately the choice is yours. :)

Whether that will be enough is a bit hard to predict. If you run the humidifier in the room, depending on how dry the room air is, it might not make enough difference in the cage. If the spout very close to the cage side the fog may just bead up on the screen, run off and pool at the base of the cage rather than go through it to pour over the foliage. However, if the humidifier is above the cage the fog and any droplets will pour down where you want it to. That's why a humidifier placed at the side usually needs some sort of opening in the mesh to work as well. Depending on how the humidifier spout is shaped you can attach tubing or pvc pipe to it and help guide the fog past the screen barrier into the cage. Then let the fog pour over all the plants.
