Humidity too high?

I have a 4 month old Panther chameleon, and I am concerned about humidity levels. I can' t seem to get it lower than 80, and typically sits around 85. Is this a big concern? I have a dripper that goes for alot if the day very slowly. I have an automatic mister. I have now set it to go on every 4 hours for 40 seconds instead of every two hours as my humidity was hitting 95-100 which I know is too high. I have a screen cage and I dont wrap it in anything as I clearly don't need it...thanks for your advice...

I wish I had your problems! I can never get the humidity high enough. Can you fill this out so we can know a little bit more of the background? Pictures are helpful.

Chameleon Info:
  • Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care?
  • Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon?
  • Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders?
  • Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule?
  • Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?
  • Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?
  • History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.

Cage Info:
  • Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions?
  • Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule?
  • Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?
  • Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
  • Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
  • Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?
  • Location - Where are you geographically located?

Current Problem - The current problem you are concerned about.

Awww… Yea, it seems like most people have the opposite problem :S I can’t believe it, I wrote it all out on my phone, and it didn’t save. LOL…starting over :(

Chameleon Info:

  • Your Chameleon - Hoping male. He is an ambilobe panther. He is 4 months give or take. I have had him for about 3 weeks now.
  • Handling - I try not to stress him out so I hold him for about five minutes, twice a day.
  • Feeding - I have been feeding crickets, but will be looking into getting some worms tomorrow. I bought silk worms, and they were all dead! He has been eating ten to fifteen crickets a day. I have been feeding in the am, and late afternoon. He seems more interested in food later in the day. I have been gut loading with Flukers gel, but I have learnt that it is crap. I have also been gut loading with carrots, apples, and tomatoes. Again, I have learnt that tomatoes are not good as they are high in phosphorus.
  • Supplements - I am using reptivite and calcium without d3. I use the calcium almost every day, and the reptivite twice a week.
  • Watering - I have an automatic dripper that is on almost all day, but at a very slow rate. I have an automatic mister that is set for every 4 hours for about 50 seconds. I see my chameleon drinking often.
  • Fecal Description - I would say his poop is textbook. Looks like it should. Has never been tested for parasites.
  • History - I don’t know anything about his past aside buying from a breeder.
Cage Info:

  • Cage Type - It is a zoomed all mesh cage. it is 18 x 18 x 36.
  • Lighting - The lighting is by zoomed. I am using a basking light and a usb light from 8 am to 8 pm which is on an automatic timer.
  • Temperature - I have three thermometers in the cage. The temp is usually 70 at the bottom, and about 79 at the basking spot. I can’t seem to get it higher. The lowest overnight temp has been 68.
  • Humidity - This is my problem. My humidity is always between 80 and 90. I maintain by automatic mister, umbrella plant, and dripper. I have three hygrometers in the cage.
  • Plants - I have an umbrella plant
  • Placement - The cage is on the kitchen table and it is kind of high traffic, but I don’t think super overwhelming at all. It is not near any fans or airvents.
  • Location - I am in British Columbia, Canada.

Current Problem - I am worried that my humidity is way too high? What should it be for a panther? when I read around I get different information.

Thank you for your time and input!

Are you using an analog hygrometer? Looks like one hanging in the cage there? If so, they are notorious for being inaccurate, especially if it is getting sprayed by the mister. If I remember correctly, in the wild the humidity for them is around 70/ 80%. Both lowes and walmart sell a decent cheap digital accurite branded thermometer/ hygrometer combo for $10/ $15. Find a dry place in the enclosure to test and then take it out and leave near the cage for constant reading. If you don't have one already, invest in a temp gun style thermometer, fairly cheap on Amazon. Only other things that stand out is maybe giving him a bit more foliage and do you have a linear uvb? Can't tell if its there and off or if you're using the cork screw type uvb bulb that comes with the kit. As others mentioned in your other thread, also commented there a bit ago, I think its a he too.

I have two digital hygrometers, and one analog. I just am a little paranoid :p to be honest though, on just crapped out(within 2 weeks) so I will be going to almost to get a new one :) okay! Awesome. I will look into a temp gun! I dont have a linear cub, but I was going to invest in one wheb i upgrade cage in 2 months, but maybe I will look into it now. Thank you for the information! I will pick up some more foilage for the little guy.

Look at hydroponic type fixtures for a good yet relatively cheap fixture. I prefer the sunblaze line but there are plenty of others out there too :D.
