Hurricane Evacuation

Trust me, I'm all for being prepared. I get it, those hurricanes are no joke. I was just trying to put OPs mind at ease incase things are out longer than expected (y)
And if worse comes to worse, I'm sure there will be a pet store open, some where, in some state, where a light can be purchased ?

Yeah I have been through a few Category 2's and a Category 3. Problem is depending on how they make landfall makes a difference as well. If you get the right side making a direct hit the force and destruction is much worse then the left. Then if they stall out your screwed too. By far one of my least favorite natural disasters. Although I am not fond of tornadoes or wild fires either. At least with Hurricanes and wild fires you get some warning though.

I think when it comes to these types of situations because I have had to deal with them all I am a bit more cautious because I have had easy 4 day evac and no damage to weeks of evac and extreme damage. I over prepare because you may not be able to buy what you need because most stores will not open immediately either.

So prepare for the worst case and hope for the best is really my opinion here.
With 2 storm systems headed into the gulf at the same time, I don’t think one can over-prepare.

Exactly the first one coming in as a tropical storm is going to drop a lot of rain and with Laura coming in 48 hours behind at an estimated category 2. I completely agree with you.

Don’t forget to stock up on feeders and bottled water for cham. After a hurricane last year no one had any feeders available locally and you probably already know how the bottled water situation is when a hurricane is coming.
Ikr!! And add COVID-19 to the mix and we're all in a mess ?
Stocking up on feeders ? it's been hard enough to get them as it is ?

Storms terrify me. I'm talking your every afternoon, Florida summer thunderstorms. I hate them. So hurricanes are ?
When we had to evacuate 3 years ago when Irma, a cat 5 storm, was making landfall in the Keys, then continued barreling straight up the coast toward us, it was just indescribable.
It was a cat 3 storm when it went over us during the night. By that time the power had gone out so we didn't know what was going on. Hurricane shutters all closed, everything as black as pitch, just waiting in that silent, dark, calm before the storm.
It's true you have a lot of warning, but those stupid things are so unpredictable! they can turn at the last minute. I'll still take a hurricane over a tornado any day if the week!

You had it quiet? During one it was as though every frog in the state was having a party! ??? It was kind of creepy.
I never minded the daily summer thunderstorms until my dog has decided to have anxiety attacks over them. 90 lb Beast trying to be a lap dog.
As a displaced New Englander, I’ll take a blizzard over all other weather systems.

I lived on Carolina Beach when Bertha hit. We evacuated off the island into Wilmington. We had tree frogs falling out of trees for days after the storm passed. They were spear fishing Flounder out of parking lots :hilarious:
Thunder storms suck. In AZ we got Monsoons which is super fun stuff and the cause of most wild fires there. Lightening and flash flooding. My Lab was 85 lbs and hated it and I too discovered what it was like to have a "lap dog" of that size

IT'S THE ATTACK OF THE KILLER FROGS ? ribbit... ribbit ? Crazy how nature can freak us out!! ?
It was only quiet from the time the power went out until I put my ear plugs in and went to sleep. ? After that the storm went right over us, but I didn't hear a thing. Sometimes having narcolepsy is a blessing in disguise ?Used to make my husband so mad because I would just fall asleep mid-arguement ?
Storms do freak out the pets for sure. Our 6 pound Tonkinese just hides. No lap beasts for me!
I did time up north too (sounds like a prison sentence ?). 5 years in Ontario, so I saw some snow storms too. I can't handle the cold ❄
There's really no where to hide from bad weather ?

I dunno maybe y'all have not been through a hurricane in the south...
I've been through one, but it was—IIRC—a cat 1 or 2. (It was... A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.... ? ) Out one day, back in a couple days later. There was some structural damage, windows, etc.

Also been through a couple Nor'easters in New England.

We also survived the Great Ice Storm of 1991, which left much of the northeast without power, phones, cable, etc. for a month in some places. We had gas for HW, and a woodstove, and put 2 families up for 2 weeks until they got heat & lights back on. Spent the days on cleanup, generator shuffling, and foraging firewood; and the evenings playing board games by candle & Coleman light.
But I got a crummy T-shirt! ?

I still think the lighting is optional; it takes a while (weeks to months) for MBD to set in, and if practical to take the cham outside for some natural rays in the interim, he should be fine—even for a few weeks.

But it's still up to each person's comfort level. I was thinking in terms of priorities, but one's gotta be able to sleep at night and look themselves in the mirror in the mornings. ?

Ehhhh I do not like the broad stroke saying it can take months for MBD to set in. We have seen babies that went without proper UVB for a month with full deformation to the limbs. So I don't like suggesting to others that it is an option.

Sounds like someone needs a Thundershirt. Your dog might benefit from one too...:p:ROFLMAO:

The Missus & I have always loved thunderstorms—kind of a romantic thing with us.
Our first dog was terrified of them; no matter how we tried to comfort her, she'd hide in the dark windowless powder room. The 2 labs, though... they'd go out & play in thunderstorms—no fear.

Unless it's really dark from the storm and you forgot candles, then you can't see yourself anyway, so it really won't matter ?

I don't like taking phrases out of context. The rest of that sentence—and post—still apply.

Years and years ago, my kids (one an older teenager and the other early 20s , just to clarify) wanted chameleons. I was a complete moron then (remember, I'm only part moron now ?). I told them "fine as long as I don't have to touch them or feed them or....." you know how it goes. I had zero knowledge about chams and simply let the salesperson at the reptile store get them set up with what I suspected was what they didn't (remember, complete moron ?).
My daughter got a veiled, and she proceeded to let him spend most of the day, every day, on top of her curtains.
He was a baby, about 6 months old when she got him, so within about 6 months of this, he had developed severe mbd affecting his legs and his spine. He was so crippled ? of course she had "mom" (the moron) take him to a different reptile place that said they'd take him in.
My son had gotten a Panther, but he moved out and took his cham with him. He honestly didn't have the right information, or ability to get it, but he religiously fed him and dusted his feeders ect. He always had him in his cage but the lighting wasn't right (coil light bulb from the pet store ). He had developed mbd as well but mostly his tounge was affected.
That cham is the one that I "rescued" and kept until he was almost 5. That's how I became RescueMom and fell in love with these little guys ?
So yes, it's so so so so so important to do everything that you can to ensure they are healthy.
After all, no one wants to be a complete moron ?

Two thundershirts (both for my Beast...don’t have my size), various pheromone calming agents (tablets and diffusers), CBD, Trazodone, Sileo, brand new toys, peanut butter filled kongs, heavy exercising ...tried it all. To take a little of the edge off is best I can do...a thundershirt, 2 Benedryl (3 if fireworks) and secure him in his ‘den’ (crate) so neither of us gets hurt.

Yes, he’s fat. Is a food thief.

My mom had a cat once that wasn't just scared of storms, but I'm pretty sure suffered from ptsd ? or bipolar ?? (hard to get them to fill out those test questions ?). The vet put her on amitriptyline (the cat, not my mom) and she stopped the random attacks on people.

I had a huge, 20 pound, polydactyl, that was an absolute beast when he went to the vet. They wouldn't see him unless he had his amitriptyline at least an hour before. He would still try to fight but that drug worked!

Thank you everyone for your help and input! We were lucky enough to be spared by the devastation Hurricane Laura brought to the Texas/Louisiana border.
