be getting a 3-4 month old panther within the next month.
How does my husbandry look so far?

Cage Info:

Cage Type - screen cage. 24x24x48inches

Lighting - Arcadia 12% 24inch tube, i have a solarmeter and was able to check the range level, 100w incandescent natural light bulb in zoo med 5.5 inch dome

Temperature - have a heat gun to measure the temp, basking spot is 81F and has a gradient going down to 76F

Humidity - I have the mist king but have not set it up yet

Plants - pothos, hibiscus, and I cant think of the large center plant at this time although I did look it up to make sure it was safe before buying

Placement - near a large window in the dining room, about 12 feet from the ceiling vent.

Location - Houston, Texas

Okay so what are the UVI range levels at the highest plant/branchpoint in the cage? Uvi at the highest point they can reach should be between 2-3. A 12% seems like it would be wayyy too high that close to the plants and branches.

Could you fill out the other section of the help form (the chameleon info part) with what you plan to do? The supplements, food, gutloading, etc are some of the most important parts of chameleon husbandry.

How often do you plan on misting? Do you have a hygrometer yet to measure humidity?

All aspects of chameleon husbandry need to be perfect before introducing a chameleon into the environment. :)

Closest branch reads 3.0 on the meter. The plants do go up to the top and reads at much higher levels. I know with the 12% high plant density is a must. I did not think he would climb to the very top of the plants since they can regulate D3. I've attached an updated picture.
  • Your Chameleon - Ambanja
  • Handling - N/A
  • Feeding - Will be following breeder guidelines on size and amount of feeder insects to feed and gut loading
  • Supplements - Rephasy Calcium Plus
  • Watering - MistKing 2-3 mins twice a day, no hydrometer yet (will get in the near future)
  • Fecal Description - NA
  • History - He will be coming from Kammerflage

I would lower the plants a bit, to about the spot with 3 uvi. The top portion of the cage should be pretty sparse, but then most other places can be dense. He will still climb on those top plants, especially while he's young. UVI levels that are too high can be harmful.

You don't want any d3 supplements with 3 UVI (repashy has d3). Calcium w/o d3 every feeding, multivitamin w/o d3 once every other week.

I would raise the heat lamp 2-3 inches of the top to prevent burns from screen-climbing.

You are buying from a very good breeder. Good on you for that.

That misting schedule is fine. If you want you can run a dripper for a couple hours a day aswell. If your humidity isnt high enough you could run a short midday misting too.

Yes I will also be having a dripper. I've attached an updated photo with the top plants removed. The higher branch you see is the basking branch and is between 2-3 uvi level with the solarmeter.

I have not raised the basking light yet but will take your advise and lift it off the screen to help prevent burns.

Okay so you can keep the plants in there but just lower them down some. Ya get me? Lol.

Good!

Did you see what I said on supplements?

Yep.

More people are trying out this method (its less used compared to more traditional ones) .. I believe there was a thread on it a few months ago.
