I’m a fan of wider heat domes. Spread out some gentle heat. Don’t make it hell hot in a tiny area so you chams burn when they screen climb. I went through that with my first…
You can even tilt the dome so it spreads the heat in a gradient. I use a 29 watt bulb in a 9” Arcadia dome and sit it right on top of the screen. 85 degrees at the branch and gentle enough at the screen that I can leave my hand there indefinitely.

Here’s your mantra from now on… If it’s burning your hand, it’s going to burn them. Of course use your wired probe to confirm the temp but also use your hand to sense how it feels at the screen. Give it a minute to let the heat build up on your hand. If you’re still comfortable, they will be too.

I just switched from an 8” heat dome to a 5.5” and I want to find an 8” thermostat one to move back, due to the gentle heat too, made the ambients a bit better IMO

I also have a 40W incandescent light bulb. Do you think that would work better than the one I am using right now?

You can go to Lowes or HD or Menards or w/e big box store you have. In the electrical section they sell the domes ( in alot of sizes might I add ) for alot cheaper than the pet stores. I bought a 10" dome for I think $17 IIRC.

The only issue with those halogens is they are more focused so the dome really doesn't do that much. IMO you need a flood or a std. incandescent appliance bulb.

What wattage do you recommend
That will depend on your set up. most typically used would be a 60-75 watt in a fixture that is raised off the top of the cage a few inches. You can try it with the 40 watt though and test your temps at the branch and on the screen. Nothing hotter than 80 at the branch for a youngen like you are getting. At the screen you should be able to sit and hold your hand there without it feeling hot.

Alright my new chameleon came today and he was climbing on the top of the cage so I turned the heat bulb off. (also because I was looking at chamelonacademy.com and it said that the normal chameleon behavior is to bask in the morning and the retreat to the branches in the afternoon. After learning this I have the heat lamp go on at 8 and then off around noon) The current temp is low 70s to very high 60s. That seems low to me but I know that he is young and doesn’t Ned a high heat. Are these too low of temps? Should I turn it back on or do you think this is ok?
