I built it, Grass cage flooring!!!!

So I decided to go out on a limb and build the grass cage floor I've been imagining, actually worked out quite well. Everything fits and humidity is way up now! It even looks cool too, well see for yourself. :D

And lastly Dom P. chilling in his perch. Happy as a CH(L)AM

I know you've put a lot of time and effort into that grass bottom, but it may not be the best bottom for your cham.
Also, if that is not a schefflera and it is the other type (I can't think of the name for the life of me right now) it could be potentially bad for your chameleon as well.

I think the grass would be okay... as long as its well kept and in organic soil.

The tree needs to go. It definitely looks like the "money tree", which as stated above is toxic if digested.

replant it with a schef, or a nice big ficus, and I think it would be okay.

Just curious as to why grass would not be a good thing. Let's hear the pros and cons.

I use a sort of blue grass in my frog tank....

Pros: Grass naturally disposes of feces, small waste matter, keeps humidity up, retains lots of moisture....

Cons: You'll need a very tiny lawn mower to mow it, if you don't have enough soil underneath the roots it's going to die very quickly because the roots will become compacted, and if you need to pull it all out it could create a pretty big mess.

I think the grass is very creative and awesome!! You did an excellent job. Sorry you have the wrong tree and have to rework it but I am sure you will again have it looking happy for your pretty chameleon.

I would think another pro is that, if the grass was thick enough, it seems like it would help deter your chameleon from eating eat dirt. I would think it would be okay if your chameleon want to eat some of the grass if he felt the urge to. Bunnies eat grass & it's good for them, right? :)

Doesn't seem like it would be tough to cut either with a pair of hedge clippers or some some big scissors. The grass may even look really good if you wanted to let it grow long & tall!

I like this idea! :)

I would not want to go picking poop and bugs out of tall grass. Eww. I think its more trouble than it's worth (for me anyways) but I suppose if you put effort into it and really wanted it, it would work out okay. I'm not sure if the grass can handle 20 minutes of misting though. Let us know if it drowns or anything.

Hrm... good point about the poop. Wonder if it would fertilize the grass? lol Might be asking for a filthy disaster too though.

You're drainage would have to be really good as well. Lots of hydroton balls, lava rock or sand...

Personally, I like a plain floor as its easier to keep clean.

But, I can see the attraction for a planted floor.

Consider dandelion instead of (or in addition to) the grass. Healthy if eaten, and very resistant to damp, drought, poor soil, low light, temperature changes...

Add some isopods and worms and any poop you dont clean up will be cleaned up for you. :)

Ya I do have it set up with about 3 inches of organic soil on topof a nice layer of lava rock. I swapped out the tree for a small ficus bejamina. Those are okay right? Good idea with the earth worms. I might add some as they would really help with any waste.
