for uhh... bigger cages.. would it be easier to build your own? or buy one..

im only 14 and i really want like a bigger chameleon (flap neck or rudis maybe) and all i have is a 10 gallon tank right now... if i made my own cage for a chameleon what would the materials i would be needing? ill look around on the internet right now but some extra help would be appreciated! thanks

Also does anyone know a good breeder for usambra pittes spectral pygym or spectral pygmy chameleons?

THANKS FOR THE HELP!

I posted this same exact question 2 days ago and no one really answered... It is a lot cheaper to build ur own than buy one tho!

It can be cheaper to build your own. It really depends on your resources. Someone posted that LLL Reptile is having a cage sale. I don't know what size cage you would need but LLL sells some nice cages in different sizes.

Cage

Our Rudis don't have a cage. We have a large fake ficus tree that they live in in the living room. Seems weird, but it works! Think outside the box:eek:

Nightcrawler is right alot of people..in good climates some allow their chams roaming room. I built my cage for nothing as I was fortunate to have tons of wood laying around from my construction days. It all depends on your resources...be it cash or wood laying around.

lol thats called 'free range' ;) There are some pretty serious keepers out there that dedicate entire rooms to this kind of keeping. I do this in the afternoons to let my boys bask in the sun through the screen door.

i work at menards so i look around for all this.
i was avoiding listing everything out (sorry for not doing this a couple days
ago xoiceox) but my water is draining out of
my turtle tank and i have some time. ( it takes too long)

now my list is approx value. it might me more or less, i dont know i only
push carts threw the areas.

ok so you need
-wood
-wood finish
-screen
-nails or screws
-hinges
-other stuff

wood.
the wood is the hard part. well it could be easy if you make it easy.
we have 1''x1''x8' boards for ~$2.00
you can get 2''x4''x8' for i think under $4

depending on the cham you might need more or less.im going to do it
for a veiled because thats what i figured it out for.

you will need 4x 4' boards, at least 8 x 2' boards, and the door pieces
which will be harder to make. they will be about 20'' x 44'' at the MAX.
so you will need at least 6-8 8' boards.

screen.
you can get metal screen or plastic lawn screen. i think i know both values.

metal.
metal screen comes 2' x 7' for ~$5
with this you need atleast 3. well no more then 3.

the plastic screen is nice. its what i use and nico uses.
i use it on the inside of my screen so he doesnt pull out his toenails,
nico uses just this.
but i got it for $22 and its 3' x 15'
youll need two and you will have some left over to put on your wall
so he can climb that if you want.

wood finish
wood finish is for sealing the wood so water will just run off it and not
soak in and i think that it is ~$10 or less, if someone knows tell us.

hardware
Screws or nails are cheep. you need one box and you will be fine.
if you are using screws i would predrill the holes and then use wood glue as
well, but that is me. i think the screws and nails are less than $5

wood glue is also cheep. i think less then $2-3 worth will get you what you
need. you only need a little.

the hinges are probably $2-10 depending on how big and fansy.

Door knobs are fun. i seen some lizard and cool looking ones at menards
so you can make it fun for like ~$5

lock can be as easy as a screen door hook and circle. i dont know the
real names but you can buy it for like $1

other.
i dont know of any thing else you will need, but a stand will help.
i got a 2'x3'x6' stand for $40 but the drainage on this is really easy and helps
a lot. also i made this stand into two stands so you can use it for other things
or con your parents into buying half sence they are using 3 shelves and you only
two. i just gave the other to my mom beacuse im nice.

i hope this gives you a general idea, it was only ment to be a guidline.
there are a lot of things you can do different like make it bigger or smaller,
but this is so general it leaves room for changing. the prices might be more
or less by you or depending on where you go so shop around.

good luck.

Pillar,
I just built one myself, I'm a little handy, My downfall is not having the right tools, So let the grown ups now they have to break out the tool box K.
I purchased everything I needed from HomeDepot for about $30 (plant included:).
The screen mess (Fiberglass) was so cheap I picked up spares.
I got the measurements from my 65G reptarium except I went i bit smaller because the cham in this one is a female Ambi.
Good luck
