I need urgent help - no exotic vet available until tomorrow!!

Guys, hes in a glass cage with a densely planted and foamed? Background. There's no way that window or that unit are causing problems in just 2 weeks. If anything an RI down the road if ac/heater air was blowing on him, but he measured the temps and they are nowhere near harming a cham. I've had solid cages, screen, perma free rangers, in all windowed rooms that also had vent and got pretty chilly in winter even to like 48 at one point during winter. OP had this cham for 2 weeks, it wouldnt be from that so fast over something so subtle. My point is, IMO it's misdirecting the issue.

Is the top of the tank glass? If so, it's not passing UVB. You cannot amplify UVB. The energy the bulb puts out only drops over distance, it cannot be increased.
A Very small percent can actually pass thru glass! Like 0.1% lol so of the remaining 99.9 percent anywhere from 20% upwards of 50% is dissipated upon contact done finished gone gone burnt out.. so 50-70% fragmented broken up and sent bouncing around uniform until fully 100% spent of energy. So pumping high amounts of uv radiation into a glass tank which blocks or in this case traps a fairly proportionate amount of the uv and sending it bouncing around would effectively be amplifying the amount of uv absorbed by your lizard sometimes to the point of a microwaved tv dinner. But yes if there was a glass top then ofcourse the inside of the tank would be 99% void. And yes the potency of every ray does windle away as it goes speeding thru space like a yoctoscopic flaming arrow lol

Amplify means to increase. You cannot increase light by bouncing it off of something. You can conserve some of the light by using reflective surfaces. You can also focus the energy by using properly bent glass.

It would violate the First Law of Thermodynamics.

You can use light to generate heat in an enclosure. By constantly feeding light, the heat will increase, but if you turn off the light, it will decrease.

If it was truly amplified... Then the light would continue bouncing around even after you shut off the light.

I was referring to the amount of uv absorbed by your cham in a glass tank compared to that of a mesh/screen enclosure in which case the glass is an amplifier where as the screen is not. So your lizard is getting an ample amount.. alot too ample in some cases. When you turn off your uv lamp i assure you UV rays are still bouncing around be it for but a brief moment. Focusing energy with bent glass is a great focus point you mentioned the visible light passes thru the bent or "curved" glass while the energy becomes focused so we have to ask ourselves what is the energy and how or why does it create such heat to the point of combustion?. Magnifying lenses are awesome great point.. what kind of ray is this energy? X-ray? Uvb? Uva? Or the sterilizing UVc?

Other wise Visible light passes thru most glass while uv mostly doesn't.

Ok yall this thread is so far off track... You really need to create your own thread to discuss your opinions about light waves etc. This does nothing for the OP but cause further confusion. This was not and is not what is harming the cham. There are many many people that use glass enclosures for their chams. So please one of you create your own thread and post there instead of in this one.

I would be surprised if the OP even came back for help being as how their thread got totally derailed.

If your using a glass terrarium it's very important to research light because you can cook your pet. However I can't
recall wich thread I'm even on anymore so I'll have to agree with you lol. Hey Caaarter... I got turned around in here..

how is if funny for someone not coming back because they didn’t get they help they need because you messed up their thread?
My mistake it was the first part.. I found the idea of us going so far off track about light to the point of running someone off with our nerdness to be funny..The OP was very happy and showed great appreciation for the advice he received im sure he will be back. Try not to get to bent outta shape over the happy stickers I apply them generously and mean no disrespect ;)

this says a lot about you. There have been many people run off this site because of threads like this that go way off the topic of helping the op. But you haven’t been on here long enough to see that. Everything we say on here can have a huge impact on weather someone is getting the right advice and therefore if there chameleon will be healthy.

I do enjoy the side convos but when they get to the point where someone is getting confused about the info given it’s not good. (Yes the op was thankful for the advice) When threads go into side convos people focus on that instead of helping the op and a lot of vital info can get missed. You have to remember that these are people new to Cham keeping that are already getting an information overload so to add to that with these conversations is not helpful.

What does it say about me? I agree we did go off track and are still. However I'm sure more people are ran off by this mean girl squad mentality then information overload. Imo

Hey guys I really need some help with my 4 month old male panther chameleon.

We’ve had him for just under 2 weeks, and this morning out of the blue he just seemed really.. sick. He wasn’t moving from his branch in the morning like he usually does. He was a super pale colour, wouldn’t move his one eye, and is super weak. After coaxing him towards his basking spot he started getting more active, moving his eyes again and seemed like his normal self. My first reaction was to take him to the vets straight away, but after calling the breeder where we got him from, said that our husbandry issue was that his tank was near a window (we live in the uk) and that his tank temperature was dropping too low at night (around 65 but last night was really cold so it couldve been lower). So I went to the store and purchased a night heater so that the temperature levels wouldn’t drop so low. When I got home he was sitting in the cool side of the tank, all curled up and that same pale colour. I tried to move him but he wasn’t responsive at all,I desperately need to take him to a vets, but no emergency vet has an exotic specialist until the morning. Is there anything I should do to get him through the night before I’m able to go tomorrow? For some reason when I’ve taken him out he’s extremely active but in his cage he’s not.

I think my biggest issue is the dimming thermostat isnt getting the temperature high enough. I’m not sure why??! I’ve put on the night heater and the highest temperature it will go is 71, even when I put it on the highest gage.

Please help, I don’t want anything to happen to him. I feel like an idiot for not listening to my gut to go to the vets. I won’t forgive myself if anything happens to him. :(

How’s he doing? How did the vet visit go?

I'm sorry but I agree that this type of derailment DOES chase off people (but mean remarks do too of course.) When we derail a thread it gives the OP the impression that our own discussion is more important than the problem he OP is having. It's also in the rules that you're supposed to remain on topic....and now it's been derailed even further.

@carljr ...I appologize to you that this thread has become derailed. plesse don't let it chase you away...we don't intend it too.

I was asking about it because both can eventually affect the chameleons health so it's better to think about it before that happens rather than say afterwards..."we'll..you shouldn't have had the cage there."
