I want a veiled but is a crested gecko better?

I pretty much had my mind set on a veiled chameleon and i know their requirements and everything..but is the misting and the caring of the veildes everyday overwhelming? because i really love the chameleons and i want one but i dont want a pet that i will regret getting because of the care (which i don't expect)..im in highschool so i dont have work or anything..my main question is will this chameleon going to be worth the care i give him? that sounds kinda harsh but im really worried here..if you dont think its worth it could u tell me if a crested gecko is better? because i want a lizard that will be a companion of mine..and i know that veildes go through the stage where they hate the world and everything, but im really hoping that since im getting it while its still young it will learn to except me....

ok right to it...

taking care of a chameleon especially just one wont be overwhelming. Get a misting system (i use habbimist but most people here hate them) there are all kinds if you want to be less technical a fine mist spray bottle will work, 2-3 times a day for 10 minutes will make them nice and moist and the water needs to be able to collect like on a leaf or something, they are great to just watch move, and hunt , words cant explain the kind of love you will have for your chammy

now i have 2 crested geckos and i love them to death, problem is... their boring, they are nocturnal so you never see them do anything, if you like the interactivity of an animal, a chameleon would be right for you, but make sure you get all the necessary supplies(open air cage, lights and blah blah) you said you know that stuff i wont linger on that subject.


so in closing BE WARNED! They are like Crack! and we are the Crackheads, ask anyone here and theyll tell you they are addicted to the shooty tongue, split hand, color changing leezards. But we wouldnt have it any other way

(ps if you want a more mild tempered chammy try a panther, most of the ones ive ever seen are mellow, like the ones we have)

Hehe veileds wil always hate the world. :p
actually there solitary animals and do not like to be handled. Crested gecko's are very easy to raise and can be handled with no problem. Not to discourage you about getting a veiled though. But i can say you'll have more of a satisfaction out of raising a chameleon.

Your right about veiled going through a stage where they hate the world... it's the stage between hatching and death!

please be realized that chameleon is not a cheap pet to keep.
a baby veiled might cost you in the range of 70 bucks.
But, the basic necessities to keep him alive easily makes your wallet cough up at least 300 dollars.
 
You can click on someones name in a post..upper left hand corner... and add them to a buddy list. Good luck with your chameleon. Their great and you won't regret your decision. David
 
ditto what dodolah said. Above everything else.. choose your animal carefully. Order one from a reputable breeder or get one at a herp show if they come to your area. Just ask and there are tons of people on here that will be more than glad to help you. David

Just wanted to let you guys know that im not just a guy who sees a cool chameleon and says hes have to have it, iv been researching them forever..just had some last minute doubts =/
 
Just remember... If you are to be successfull in raising a healthy animal depends to a great deal on the health of what you start out with. rule of thumb.. the older the better and easier to raise. You might think about getting one around four months old. Be sure to get a male as you don't want the added complications of a female until your more experienced. Good luck and keep us posted on whatever decisions you make. David

well i was saying at the reptile store by my house(dont worry its not like petsmart or anything) they sel for 40 bucks, i get a good deal on everything there, but i understand what your saying and yah im willing to spend the money

Thanks and will do for sure, around how big are the 4 monthies by the way? cause the ones at the shop are still a bright lime green and seem to be around 4 inches WITH the tail curled up. probably about 6 or 7 inches with it spread out

it can be hard to speculate as some chams grows bigger than the other.
but mine is about 4.5 inches (w/o tail measurement) and he's 4 months old.
 
Howdy Dylan,

You may find that a chameleon keeper on this site lives within driving distance of you and is selling healthy chameleons. What part of the world are you located?
 
There is no comparison. Geckos are boring. Chameleons are the most facinating of all reptiles. And...they are easy to keep. The only thing with chameleons is you can't up and go on vacation without a qualified babysitter....
